Abstract

A method for operating a ground fault circuit interrupter. In accordance with an embodiment, an operating parameter of the ground fault circuit interrupter can be adjusted in response to an alternating current line signal and a reference signal. In accordance with another embodiment a plurality of indicator signals are generated in response to an alternating current signal. The indicator signals are used to generate one or more control signals and at least one of the control signals is used to control a control a ground fault circuit interrupter.

Claims

1. A method for controlling a ground fault circuit interrupter, comprising:

providing an alternating line signal;

generating a plurality of indicator signals in response to the alternating line signal, wherein at least one of the indicator signals indicates a number of times a clock cycles between line events;

generating at least one control signal from the plurality of indicator signals; and

using the at least one control signal to adjust a clock frequency of the ground fault circuit interrupter.

2. The method of claim 1, further including using the at least one control signal to adjust a circuit parameter of the ground fault circuit interrupter.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein generating the plurality of indicator signals in response to the alternating line signal includes using a zero-crossing detector to count a number of times a clock signal crosses zero in a positive direction in a predetermined portion of a period of the alternating line signal.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein generating at least one control signal from the plurality of indicator signals includes comparing the number of times the clock signal crosses zero with a reference count.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein using the at least one control signal to adjust the clock frequency of the ground fault circuit interrupter includes adjusting the clock frequency upward in response to the number of times the clock signal crosses zero being less than the reference count.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein using the at least one control signal to adjust the clock frequency of the ground fault circuit interrupter includes adjusting the clock frequency downward in response to the number of times the clock signal crosses zero being greater than the reference count.

The method of claim 1, wherein generating the plurality of indicator signals in response to the alternating line signal includes using a zero-crossing detector to count a number of times a clock signal crosses zero in a negative direction in a predetermined portion of a period of the alternating line signal.

The method of claim 1, wherein generating the plurality of indicator signals in response to the alternating line signal includes using a zero-crossing detector to count a number of times a clock signal crosses zero in a negative direction in a predetermined portion of a period of the alternating line signal.

The method of claim 8, wherein generating at least one control signal from the plurality of indicator signals includes comparing the number of times the clock signal crosses zero with a reference count, and wherein using the at least one control signal to adjust the clock frequency of the ground fault circuit interrupter includes adjusting the clock frequency downward in response to the number of times the clock signal crosses zero being greater than the reference count.

10. A method for operating a ground fault circuit interrupter, comprising:

providing an alternating current signal to the ground fault circuit interrupter; and

generating operating control signals in response to the alternating current signal, wherein the operating control signals adjust operational parameters of the ground fault circuit interrupter, and wherein generating the operating control signals comprises generating a clock frequency control signal in response to a number of ground fault circuit interrupter clock signals occurring in a portion of a period of the alternating current signal.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein generating the operating control signals comprises monitoring a load signal in response to detecting a zero crossing of the alternating current signal.

12. A method for controlling a ground fault circuit interrupter, comprising:

providing an alternating line signal;

generating a plurality of indicator signals in response to the alternating line signal, wherein the indicator signals indicate a level of the alternating line signal;

generating at least one control signal from the plurality of indicator signals; and

using the at least one control signal to control the ground fault circuit interrupter and to adjust a clock of the ground fault circuit interrupter.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein generating the plurality of indicator signals comprises:

comparing the alternating line signal with a first reference to determine a zero-crossing event.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein using the at least one control signal to control the ground fault circuit interrupter includes sequencing events in response to the alternating line signal being in a first phase.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein a first phase is a portion of a sine wave that is greater than zero.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein using the at least one control signal to control the ground fault circuit interrupter includes using the at least one control signal to create filtering windows.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein using the at least one control signal to control the ground fault circuit interrupter includes using the at least one control signal to space events apart.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein using the at least one control signal to control the ground fault circuit interrupter includes using the at least one control signal to initiate an event.

19. The method of claim 12, wherein using the at least one control signal to control the ground fault circuit interrupter includes using the at least one control signal to select a power saving operating mode.

20. The method of claim 12 wherein using the at least one control signal to adjust the clock includes counting the number of times counting the number of times the clock cycles within a first half period of the alternating line signal and decreasing a frequency of the clock in response to a measure count value being greater than a reference count value.

21. The method of claim 12, wherein generating a plurality of indicator signals includes generating at least one indicator signal in response to a load coupled to an AC power system to which the ground fault interrupter circuit is coupled.
