1. A method of power transmission control by an active implantable medical device, the method comprising:

  • establishing a communications link with an external data retrieval apparatus during a portion of a period of time, wherein the portion corresponds to a time during which a measure of quality of a signal transmitted by the active implantable medical device and received by the external apparatus has previously satisfied a criterion value;

    transmitting data to the external data retrieval apparatus during the portion of the period of time; and

    controlling a signal transmission power level of the implantable medical device during the portion of the period of time by;

    receiving a current measure of quality of a signal transmitted by the active implantable medical device, the current measure received from the external data retrieval apparatus;

    comparing the current measure to the criterion value; and

    adjusting the signal transmission power level until the current measure is at or near the criterion value.
