Circuits, systems and methods to detect and accommodate power supply voltage droop
First Claim
1. A voltage monitoring circuit, comprising:
- droop detection circuitry configured to;
receive a power supply signal from a power supply configured to supply power to a functional circuit, wherein the power supply signal is indicative of a power supply voltage supplied by the power supply to the functional circuit;
detect if the power supply voltage of the power supply signal from the power supply has drooped; and
generate droop status information indicating if droop was detected in the power supply signal; and
control circuitry configured to;
receive the droop status information;
provide mode status information indicating a first voltage level performance mode to the functional circuit to cause the functional circuit to operate at a first minimum operating voltage, based on the received droop status information indicating no droop in the power supply signal; and
provide mode status information indicating a second voltage level performance mode to the functional circuit to cause the functional circuit to operate at a second minimum operating voltage lower than the first minimum operating voltage level, based on the received droop status information indicating droop in the power supply signal.

Abstract
Circuits, systems, and methods for monitoring a power supply voltage and determining if the power supply voltage has drooped are disclosed. In one embodiment, a voltage monitoring circuit is provided and configured to determine if the power supply voltage supplied to a functional circuit has drooped. When no droop of the power supply voltage is detected, the voltage monitoring circuit is configured to provide an indication to the functional circuit to operate in a first mode. When droop of the power supply voltage is detected, the voltage monitoring circuit is configured to provide an indication to the functional circuit to operate in a second mode. In this manner, operating margin in the power supply may be reduced since the functional circuit may be configured to properly operate when a voltage droop of the power supply voltage occurs.
