Abstract

A method of transmitting information to a mobile device includes providing a read head with a slot for swiping a magnetic stripe of a card, a power supply coupled to wake-up electronics and a microcontroller. The wake-up electronics are powered by a microphone bias of a mobile device.

Claims

1. A method of transmitting information to a mobile device, comprising:

powering wake-up electronics of a card reader by a microphone bias voltage signal of the mobile device, wherein the wake-up electronics are configured to transition a microcontroller into an active mode upon detection of a card swipe signal;

reading a payment card using the card reader, the card reader comprising a read head configured for reading a magnetic stripe of the payment card;

receiving a raw magnetic head signal at an analog to digital front-end of the card reader, the analog to digital front end coupled to the microcontroller and a power subsystem of the card reader configured to convert the microphone bias voltage signal into a system voltage signal that enables the analog to digital front-end to operate;

converting, by the analog to digital front-end, the raw magnetic head signal into a processed digital signal that the microcontroller can interpret; and

sending an output signal to the mobile device, the output signal based at least in part on contents of the raw magnetic head signal.

2. The method claim 1, further comprising:

producing an encrypted output jack signal.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

producing an output jack signal at a frequency, such that the output jack signal appears to look AC to a microphone input of the mobile device.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

producing an output jack signal at a frequency of 2 KHz to 48 kHz.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

capturing card readings at the analog to digital front-end that are swept at a rate of 5 inches to 50 inches per second.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sending an output jack signal to the mobile device at a constant baud rate.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the constant baud rate is between 2400 to 9200 baud.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the card reader further includes device electronics comprising an amplifier/filter, a differentiator, and a comparator;

and

wherein the analog to digital front-end includes, the amplifier/filter, the differentiator, the comparator, and the wake-up electronics.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

using the wake-up electronics to signal the microcontroller, which in turn puts the device electronics into an active mode from a sleep mode, and back into the sleep mode when a card swipe signal stops.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

powering down the wake-up electronics with the microcontroller when the device electronics are in the active mode.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

powering up the wake-up electronics when the device electronics return to a sleep mode.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the detection of a card swipe signal by the wake-up electronics includes detecting when there is an edge from leading zeros from the reading of the magnetic stripe of the payment card.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the card reader further comprises an amplifier/filter, differentiator, comparator, and transmission electronics.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

amplifying a raw magnetic head signal with the amplifier/filter; and

processing the raw magnetic head signal before the microcontroller accepts it as an input signal.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

differentiating, with the differentiator, the raw magnetic head signal to look for peaks in the input signal.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

using the comparator to take an output of the differentiator;

comparing the output of the differentiator to a reference voltage; and

producing an output that is a processed digital version of a magnetic swipe.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

using the comparator to look for where an input signal crosses zero.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

using the microcontroller to accept a comparator input; and

processing the comparator input and encrypting at least a portion of data of the comparator input.

19. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

using the microcontroller to control power to the amplifier/filter, the differentiator and the comparator.

20. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

using the transmission electronics to accept output data of the microcontroller as an input and using the input to modulate a microphone-bias line of the mobile device.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

using the microphone-bias line to power and transmit data back to the mobile device.

22. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the microcontroller to convert raw bit patterns into formatted credit card information.

23. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the microcontroller to independently determine if swiped card data is valid.

24. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

accepting a motion of the card bi-directionally past the read head.

25. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

accepting a motion of the card at varying velocities as the payment card is swiped past the read head.

26. The method of claim 1, further comprising using the microphone bias for both powering the card reader and transmitting data back to a mobile device.

27. The method of claim 1, further comprising utilizing an op-amp and a discrete transistor in the wake-up electronics to detect the card swipe signal.

28. The method of claim 1, wherein the microphone bias voltage signal is a direct current (DC) voltage signal, and wherein converting the microphone bias voltage signal into a system voltage signal comprises a DC to DC conversion.

29. A card reader apparatus, comprising:

a housing having a slot, the slot configured to accept a magnetic stripe card;

a read head, located in the slot of the housing, the read head configured for reading a magnetic stripe card;

a microcontroller, coupled to the read head;

a power subsystem, coupled to the microcontroller, the power subsystem configured to convert a microphone bias voltage signal into a system voltage signal that enables the microcontroller to operate;

wake up electronics, coupled to the microcontroller; and

a jack configured for interfacing with a microphone input having the microphone bias voltage signal, the jack further configured for accepting power from the microphone bias voltage signal, the jack being coupled to the wake up electronics, the power subsystem, and the microcontroller.

30. The card reader of claim 29, wherein the microphone bias voltage signal is a direct current (DC) voltage signal, and wherein converting the microphone bias voltage signal into a system voltage signal comprises a DC to DC conversion.
