1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

  • receiving, by a home security system, a first indication that a user is not on a premises of a home within a first period of time;

    placing the home security system into an away mode based on the first indication, wherein the away mode defines a first response for a security event;

    determining that the premises is unoccupied within a second period of time;

    placing the home security system into the away mode based on the determination that the premises is unoccupied within the second period of time;

    determining, by the home security system, within the second period of time, whether a second indication that the user will not return for an extended time is present;

    based on a determination that the second indication is present within the second period of time, placing the home security system into a vacation mode, wherein the vacation mode defines a second response for the security event, the second response being different from the first response;

    based on a determination that the second indication is not present within the second period of time,initiating a timer that has a start time and an expiration time;

    determining whether the premises is unoccupied between the start time and the expiration time;

    based on a determination that the premises is unoccupied between the start time and the expiration time, placing the home security system into the vacation mode at the expiration time;

    detecting the security event;

    generating the second response based on the home security system operating in the vacation mode; and

    providing the second response.
