1. A mesh network comprising:
- a plurality of nodes, each node comprising;
a light source for emitting a modulated light to be received by a mobile device; and
a radio-frequency transceiver for emitting and receiving a radio-frequency signal enabling bi-directional communication with at least one other node in the mesh network; and
a mesh controller for issuing commands, receiving data, or communicating with a device or network outside the mesh network,wherein the mesh controller is configured to;
receive, from a mobile device, a received signal strength indicator measurement of three or more nodes of the plurality of nodes;
receive three or more separate packets, each separate packet including information identifying a respective one of the three or more nodes; and
using known locations of the identified three or more nodes and the received signal strength measurement, estimate a location of the mobile device within a space.

A mobile device may receive either or both signals and determine its position based thereon. 11. A method of communicating among a plurality of nodes in a mesh network, the method comprising:

emitting, from a light source disposed in each node, a modulated light to be received by a mobile device; emitting and receiving, from a radio-frequency transceiver disposed in each node, a radio-frequency signal to thereby enable bi-directional communication with at least one other node in the mesh network; receiving, by a mesh controller, received signal strength indicators, the received signal strength indicator measurements made based on signals received from the mobile device; receiving three or more packets, each of the three or more received packets including information identifying a node sending a respective one of the three or more packets; and using known locations of the three or more nodes and the received signal strength at each of the one or more nodes, estimate a location of the mobile device within a space. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)

21. A mesh network, comprising:

a plurality of nodes, each node comprising; a light source for emitting a modulated light to be received by a mobile device; and a radio-frequency transceiver for emitting and receiving a radio-freauency signal enabling bi-directional communication with at least one other node in the mesh network; and a mesh controller for issuing commands, receiving data, or communicating with a device or network outside the mesh network, wherein, during commissioning of candidate nodes into the mesh network, the controller is configured to; in response to receipt of a command to flash a light source of a candidate nodes, determine positions of candidate nodes for commissioning near a previously commissioned node using received signal strength measurements from the previously commissioned node; in response to the determination, generate signals directed to the candidate node having been determined to be positioned near the previously commissioned node that cause each of the candidate nodes to flash their respective light source; select for commissioning one of the candidate nodes flashing its respective light source; receive a physical location of the selected candidate node; and associate the physical location of the selected candidate node with identifying information related to the selected candidate node. - View Dependent Claims (22)
