Abstract

A light source emits a modulated light, and a radio-frequency transceiver disposed therewith emits a radio-frequency signal. A mobile device may receive either or both signals and determine its position based thereon. The light and radio-frequency sources may be disposed in node in a network of said sources, and the nodes may communicate via the radio-frequency transceivers.

Claims

1. A mesh network comprising:

a plurality of nodes, each node comprising;

a light source for emitting a modulated light to be received by a mobile device; and

a radio-frequency transceiver for emitting and receiving a radio-frequency signal enabling bi-directional communication with at least one other node in the mesh network; and

a mesh controller for issuing commands, receiving data, or communicating with a device or network outside the mesh network,

wherein the mesh controller is configured to;

receive, from a mobile device, a received signal strength indicator measurement of three or more nodes of the plurality of nodes;

receive three or more separate packets, each separate packet including information identifying a respective one of the three or more nodes; and

using known locations of the identified three or more nodes and the received signal strength measurement, estimate a location of the mobile device within a space.

2. The mesh network of claim 1, wherein the mesh controller is in one node of the plurality of nodes in the mesh network having a lighting source.

3. The mesh network of claim 1, wherein the radio-frequency transceiver in each node broadcasts bits sequentially in accordance with a physical modulation scheme.

4. The mesh network of claim 3, wherein the broadcast bits comprise packets of fixed or variable length.

5. The mesh network of claim 4, wherein the packets comprise one or more of information identifying each packet, information identifying a transmitter of the packet, information identifying an intended recipient of the packet, commands, or data collected by a device connected to the mesh network.

6. The mesh network of claim 5, wherein each node is configured to:

in response to receipt of a packet containing a packet identifier (ID), compare the received packet ID to a packet ID assigned to the node; and

based on a result of the comparison indicating that the node is the intended recipient of the packet, execute a command associated with the received packet.

7. The mesh network of claim 1, wherein each node further comprises an assigned packet ID.

8. The mesh network of claim 1, wherein the mesh network comprises a communications-range extender for a mobile device, the communications-range extender providing the mobile device with access to a communications network external to the mesh network.

9. The mesh network of claim 8, wherein the communications-range extender comprises a first node and second node both in the mesh network, the first node configured to:

wrap a non-mesh packet'"'"'s content into one or more mesh packets; and

broadcast the one or more mesh packets to the second node in the mesh network; and

the second node, in communication with a communication network external to the mesh network, configured to;

receive the one or more mesh packets broadcast by the first node;

unwrap the non-mesh packet'"'"'s content from the received one or more mesh packets; and

transmit the non-mesh packet content to the external communications network.

10. The mesh network of claim 1, wherein the radio-frequency transceiver receives a signal assigning a packet ID or identifier to the node including the radio-frequency transceiver.

11. A method of communicating among a plurality of nodes in a mesh network, the method comprising:

emitting, from a light source disposed in each node, a modulated light to be received by a mobile device;

emitting and receiving, from a radio-frequency transceiver disposed in each node, a radio-frequency signal to thereby enable bi-directional communication with at least one other node in the mesh network;

receiving, by a mesh controller, received signal strength indicators, the received signal strength indicator measurements made based on signals received from the mobile device;

receiving three or more packets, each of the three or more received packets including information identifying a node sending a respective one of the three or more packets; and

using known locations of the three or more nodes and the received signal strength at each of the one or more nodes, estimate a location of the mobile device within a space.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

issuing commands to, receiving data from, or communicating, by the mesh controller, with a device or network outside the mesh network.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

broadcasting bits sequentially in accordance with a physical modulation scheme by each radio-frequency transceiver.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the broadcasted bits comprise packets of fixed or variable length.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the packets comprise one or more of information identifying each packet, information identifying a transmitter of the packet, an intended recipient of the packet, commands, or data collected by a device connected to the mesh network.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein each node further comprises an assigned packet ID.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

in response to receiving a packet containing a packet identifier (ID), comparing a received packet ID to the packet ID assigned to the node; and

based on a result of the comparison indicating that the node is the intended recipient of the packet, executing a command associated with the received packet ID.

18. The method of claim 11, further comprising extending a communications range of a mobile device using the mesh network by accessing a communications network external to the mesh network.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein extending a communications range of the mobile device comprises:

wrapping, at a first node, a non-mesh packet'"'"'s content into one or more mesh packets; and

broadcasting the one or more mesh packets to a second node, wherein the second node is in communication with a communication network external to the mesh network.

20. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

receiving, by the radio-frequency transceiver, a signal assigning a packet ID or identifier to one node of the plurality of nodes in the mesh network.

21. A mesh network, comprising:

a plurality of nodes, each node comprising;

a light source for emitting a modulated light to be received by a mobile device; and

a radio-frequency transceiver for emitting and receiving a radio-freauency signal enabling bi-directional communication with at least one other node in the mesh network; and

a mesh controller for issuing commands, receiving data, or communicating with a device or network outside the mesh network, wherein, during commissioning of candidate nodes into the mesh network, the controller is configured to;

in response to receipt of a command to flash a light source of a candidate nodes, determine positions of candidate nodes for commissioning near a previously commissioned node using received signal strength measurements from the previously commissioned node;

in response to the determination, generate signals directed to the candidate node having been determined to be positioned near the previously commissioned node that cause each of the candidate nodes to flash their respective light source;

select for commissioning one of the candidate nodes flashing its respective light source;

receive a physical location of the selected candidate node; and

associate the physical location of the selected candidate node with identifying information related to the selected candidate node.

22. The mesh network of claim 21, further comprising:

a back end server, wherein the back end server is configured to;

receive, from a mobile device, the physical location of the selected candidate node; and

associate the received physical location of the selected candidate node with the identifying information related to the selected candidate node in a database.
