Abstract

A system for controlling a treatment device generates a graphical interface that visually prompts a user in a step-wise fashion to use the treatment device to perform a process of forming a pattern of lesions that extends both circumferentially and axially in different levels in a body region. The graphical interface displays for the user a visual record of the progress of the process from start to finish and guides the user so that so that individual lesions desired within a given level are all formed, and that a given level of lesions is not skipped.

Claims

1. A surgical system comprising a controller, a monitor and a radio frequency generator for applying radiofrequency energy to a patient to create a plurality of tissue lesions in a surgical procedure at a series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue utilizing a single electrosurgical device, the monitor including graphic displays configured to simultaneously display an electrode array icon and a lesion icon, the electrode array icon indicating a first parameter and the lesion icon simultaneously indicating a) the series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue;

b) a designated level of tissue from the series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue;

c) a number of lesions formed in the designated level of tissue; and

d) a number of lesions not formed in the designated level of tissue and in the axially spaced apart levels of tissue other than the designated level of tissue.

2. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the lesion icon is configured to change in real time to step wise guide a user through the surgical procedure to create the plurality of tissue lesions at the series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

3. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the lesion icon is configured to change in real time to record a progress of the surgical procedure from a start to a finish of the surgical procedure and display a history of the surgical procedure.

4. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the first parameter is one of a measured tissue temperature value at a given time, a measured electrode temperature value at a given time or a measured impedance value at a given time.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein at treatment at one of the series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue, a balloon of the single electrosurgical device connected to the radiofrequency generator is adapted to be only partially expanded, and at treatment at a subsequent level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue, the balloon of the electrosurgical device is adapted to be more fully expanded.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the electrode array icon is adapted to indicate a second parameter, the first and second parameters adapted to provide a numeric display which is adapted to be altered if an electrode channel of the electrosurgical device connected to the radiofrequency generator is disabled.

7. The surgical system of claim 6, wherein the numeric display is adapted to be altered by being blanked out.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein a visual marking is configured to be provided at the lesion icon to mark where a user has visualized a selected anatomical home base reference for formation of lesions and the axially spaced apart levels of tissue are configured to be graphically oriented relative to the mark.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the lesion icon includes first, second and third stacked lesion icons corresponding to first, second and third levels of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue, wherein after treatment at the first level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue, a second graphical form is configured to be displayed for treatment at the second level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue while an indication of treatment of the first level remains visible.

10. The surgical system of claim 9, wherein a visual marker is configured to change to align with the second lesion icon after treatment is completed at the first level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

11. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the second lesion icon is configured to be rotated for viewing along an axis during treatment at a corresponding level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

12. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the lesion icon is in a form of a series of discs, each disc segmented into a plurality of segments, each segment corresponding to a tissue treatment region at a selected level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

13. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein a graphical depiction of another of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue is configured to change in response to sensing electrode impedance which indicates contact with a target tissue.

A graphical user interface for an electrosurgical procedure for treatment of a sphincter in a gastro-intestinal tract of a patient, the electrosurgical procedure including applying radiofrequency energy through a plurality of radiofrequency electrodes to create a plurality of lesions at a plurality of axially spaced levels of tissue, the graphical user interface comprising a graphical display having a first section and a second section, the first section providing an indication of at least one measured parameter of an electrode of the plurality of radiofrequency electrodes or of tissue at the axially spaced level of tissue and the second section providing a graphic indication simultaneously indicating a) the plurality of axially spaced levels of tissue b) a number of lesions formed at each of the plurality of axially spaced levels of tissue;

and c) a number of lesions not formed at each of the plurality of axially spaced levels of tissue.

15. The graphical user interface of claim 14, wherein the at least one measured parameter indicates a first parameter and a second parameter, the first parameter providing a tissue temperature value and the second parameter providing an impedance value.

16. The graphical user interface of claim 15, wherein the first section further includes a timer icon indicating an elapsed amount of time, the tissue temperature value and impedance value displayed in an array around the timer icon.

17. The graphical user interface of claim 16, wherein the graphical display indicates within the array if an electrode channel of an electrosurgical device having the plurality of radiofrequency electrodes is disabled.

The graphical user interface of claim 14, wherein the second section includes a plurality of stacked lesion level icons wherein one of the lesion level icons is visually removed from the plurality of stacked lesion level icons when a corresponding level of tissue from the plurality of axially spaced levels of tissue is selected.

19. The graphical user interface of claim 14, wherein the second section includes a plurality of stacked lesion level icons wherein one of the lesion level icons is visually rotated when a corresponding level of tissue from the plurality of axially spaced levels of tissue is selected.
