User interface for displaying internal state of autonomous driving system
First Claim
1. A method comprising:
- determining, by one or more processors, when an autonomous driving system associated with a vehicle is ready to autonomously control the vehicle;
when the autonomous driving system is ready to autonomously control the vehicle, providing, by the one or more processors, a notification to the occupant that the autonomous driving system is ready to control the vehicle;
receiving, by the one or more processors, a first input indicating that the occupant is ready for the vehicle to maneuver the vehicle to a destination system;
in response to the first input, operating, by the one or more processors, the vehicle in an autonomous driving mode towards the destination;
after engaging the autonomous driving system, receiving, by the one or more processors, second input indicating that the occupant wants the autonomous driving system to stop controlling the vehicle in the autonomous driving mode; and
using, by the one or more processors, the second input to change operation of the vehicle.

Abstract
A passenger in an automated vehicle may relinquish control of the vehicle to a control computer when the control computer has determined that it may maneuver the vehicle safely to a destination. The passenger may relinquish or regain control of the vehicle by applying different degrees of pressure, for example, on a steering wheel of the vehicle. The control computer may convey status information to a passenger in a variety of ways including by illuminating elements of the vehicle. The color and location of the illumination may indicate the status of the control computer, for example, whether the control computer has been armed, is ready to take control of the vehicle, or is currently controlling the vehicle.

16. A system comprising:
-
a first input apparatus; an autonomous driving system including one or more processors configured to; determine when the autonomous driving system is ready to autonomously control a vehicle; when the autonomous driving system is ready to autonomously control the vehicle, provide a notification to the occupant that the autonomous driving system is ready to control the vehicle; receive a first input indicating that the occupant is ready for the vehicle to maneuver the vehicle to a destination system; in response to the first input, operate the vehicle in an autonomous driving mode towards the destination; after engaging the autonomous driving system, receive second input indicating that the occupant wants the autonomous driving system to stop controlling the vehicle in the autonomous driving mode; and use, by the one or more processors, the second input to change operation of the vehicle.

20. A non-transitory computer readable medium on which instructions are stored, the instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a method, the method comprising:
-
determining when an autonomous driving system associated with a vehicle is ready to autonomously control the vehicle; when the autonomous driving system is ready to autonomously control the vehicle, providing a notification to the occupant that the autonomous driving system is ready to control the vehicle; receiving a first input indicating that the occupant is ready for the vehicle to maneuver the vehicle to a destination system; in response to the first input, operating the vehicle in an autonomous driving mode towards the destination; after engaging the autonomous driving system, receiving second input indicating that the occupant wants the autonomous driving system to stop controlling the vehicle in the autonomous driving mode; and using the second input to change operation of the vehicle.
