Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatus for resource locator remarketing are presented. In one aspect, a method includes receiving visitation data from a publisher, the visitation data specifying a device identifier and a resource locator specifying a resource that was provided to a user device; identifying a content feed that includes regular expressions, each regular expression specifying matching character strings and a set of content items that are eligible to be provided to user devices corresponding to visitation data including a resource locator matching one of the regular expressions; identifying, a first matching regular expression that matches the resource locator specified by the visitation data; selecting a content item from the content items that correspond to the first matching regular expression; and providing data that causes presentation of the selected content item to the user device.

Claims

1. A method implemented by data processing apparatus, the method comprising:

determining a device identifier corresponding to a user device;

accessing, based on the device identifier, visitation data that specifies resources that were previously provided to the user device corresponding to the device identifier;

identifying, by one or more data processing apparatus and based on one of the resources specified by the visitation data, a content feed including content items that are eligible to be provided to the user device in response to one or more resource locators of the resource matching one or more character strings specified by a publisher associated with the content feed;

selecting, by one or more data processing apparatus, a content item associated with a character string that matches a resource locator from the one or more resource locators that are eligible to be provided to the user device based on the match between the particular resource locator and the matching character string; and

providing, to the user device and by one or more data processing apparatus, data that causes presentation of the selected content item at the user device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying, from the one or more character strings included in the content feed, a second matching character string that matches the particular resource locator; and

determining that a first priority of the matching character string is greater than a second priority of the second matching character string, and wherein the content item is selected from a set of content items that corresponds to the matching character string based on the determination that the first priority of the matching character string is greater than the second priority of the second matching character string.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein each matching character string is a matching regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

determining a priority for each matching regular expression based on a granularity of the regular expression.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the one or more character strings is a regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings, and wherein at least one of the regular expressions includes a uniform resource locator and a metacharacter.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the one or more character strings is a regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings, and wherein at least one of the regular expressions includes a keyword and a metacharacter.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying, based on a second resource locator of the resource locators included in the visitation data, a second content feed including second content items that are eligible to be provided to the user device in response to one or more resource locators in the visitation data matching one or more second character strings specified by a second publisher associated with the second content feed;

identifying, from the one or more character strings, a second matching character string that matches a second resource locator from the one or more resource locators included in the visitation data; and

selecting a second content item from the second content items that are eligible to be provided to the user device based on the match between the second resource locator and the second matching character string, and wherein providing data that causes presentation of the selected content item comprises providing the content item and the second content item to a content item selection process.

8. A system comprising:

one or more data processing apparatus; and

a data store storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more data processing apparatus, cause the one or more data processing apparatus to perform operations comprising;

determining a device identifier corresponding to a user device;

accessing, based on the device identifier, visitation data that specifies resources that were previously provided to the user device corresponding to the device identifier;

identifying, based on one of the resources specified by the visitation data, a content feed including content items that are eligible to be provided to the user device in response to one or more resource locators of the resource matching one or more character strings specified by a publisher associated with the content feed;

selecting a content item associated with a character string that matches a resource locator from the one or more resource locators that are eligible to be provided to the user device based on the match between the particular resource locator and the matching character string; and

providing, to the user device, data that causes presentation of the selected content item at the user device.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise:

identifying, from the one or more character strings included in the content feed, a second matching character string that matches the particular resource locator; and

determining that a first priority of the matching character string is greater than a second priority of the second matching character string, and wherein the content item is selected from a set of content items that corresponds to the matching character string based on the determination that the first priority of the matching character string is greater than the second priority of the second matching character string.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein each matching character string is a matching regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the operations further comprise:

determining a priority for each matching regular expression based on a granularity of the regular expression.

12. The system of claim 8, wherein each of the one or more character strings is a regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings, and wherein at least one of the regular expressions includes a uniform resource locator and a metacharacter.

13. The system of claim 8, wherein each of the one or more character strings is a regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings, and wherein at least one of the regular expressions includes a keyword and a metacharacter.

14. The system of claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise:

identifying, based on a second resource locator of the resource locators included in the visitation data, a second content feed including second content items that are eligible to be provided to the user device in response to one or more resource locators in the visitation data matching one or more second character strings specified by a second publisher associated with the second content feed;

identifying, from the one or more character strings, a second matching character string that matches a second resource locator from the one or more resource locators included in the visitation data; and

selecting a second content item from the second content items that are eligible to be provided to the user device based on the match between the second resource locator and the second matching character string, and wherein providing data that causes presentation of the selected content item comprises providing the content item and the second content item to a content item selection process.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by one or more data processing apparatus, cause the one or more data processing apparatus to perform operations comprising:

determining a device identifier corresponding to a user device;

accessing, based on the device identifier, visitation data that specifies resources that were previously provided to the user device corresponding to the device identifier;

identifying, based on one of the resources specified by the visitation data, a content feed including content items that are eligible to be provided to the user device in response to one or more resource locators of the resource matching one or more character strings specified by a publisher associated with the content feed;

selecting a content item associated with a character string that matches a resource locator from the one or more resource locators that are eligible to be provided to the user device based on the match between the particular resource locator and the matching character string; and

providing, to the user device, data that causes presentation of the selected content item at the user device.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the operations further comprise:

identifying, from the one or more character strings included in the content feed, a second matching character string that matches the particular resource locator; and

determining that a first priority of the matching character string is greater than a second priority of the second matching character string, and wherein the content item is selected from a set of content items that corresponds to the matching character string based on the determination that the first priority of the matching character string is greater than the second priority of the second matching character string.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein each matching character string is a matching regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17, wherein the operations further comprise:

determining a priority for each matching regular expression based on a granularity of the regular expression.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein each of the one or more character strings is a regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings, and wherein at least one of the regular expressions includes a uniform resource locator and a metacharacter.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein each of the one or more character strings is a regular expression that specifies a set of matching character strings, and wherein at least one of the regular expressions includes a keyword and a metacharacter.
