1. A method for adjusting the light output of an optoacoustic imaging system from an initial level to an operating level, the optoacoustic imaging system comprising a first light source having a light output control, a probe for delivering light to a volume, the probe being associated with one or more sensors, a light path operatively connected to the first lightsource, the light path providing light from the first light source to the probe, the method comprising the steps of:

  • a. setting the light output control of the first light source to an initial value;

    b. pulsing the first light source, thereby delivering light to the probe and the volume;

    c. taking a measurement from the one or more sensors;

    d. changing the setting of the light output control of the first light source based upon the measurement from the one or more sensors; and

    e. repeating steps b-d prior to the operating level being reached.
