Abstract

A system and method provide fail-safe operation of a lighting system. A lighting level detector is used to obtain a baseline lighting level for a low-intensity light. If the detector measures less than the baseline level when an occupancy sensor determines the space is unoccupied, a high-intensity light is energized and an indication is provided to a user that the low-intensity light has failed. A method provides daylighting operation of a lighting system. An occupancy sensor can have Wi-Fi functionality to enable remote configuration of the sensor. A line voltage occupancy sensor can include an interface with low voltage devices. An occupancy sensor can include an integral interface to enable an external control system to override the sensor'"'"'s normal logic under emergency conditions. An occupancy sensor can include an active temperature compensation feature. An occupancy sensor can also incorporate an automatically adjustable coverage area.

Claims

1. A lighting system, comprising:

an occupancy sensor for sensing an occupancy condition of a monitored area; and

a light sensor for providing a lighting signal representative of a lighting level of the monitored area;

a first light configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor senses a presence of an occupant in the monitored area;

a second light configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor fails to sense the presence of an occupant in the monitored area;

wherein, regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area, the first light is energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level, and the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level being a lighting level associated with a failure of the second light.

2. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the second light is configured to be energized when the occupancy condition of the monitored area is determined by the occupancy sensor to be a vacant condition.

3. The lighting system of claim 2, wherein the second light is energized when the occupancy condition of the monitored area is determined by the occupancy sensor to be a vacant condition and the first light is de-energized.

4. The lighting system of claim 2, wherein the second light has a constant-on feature in which the second light is energized regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area.

5. The lighting system of claim 2, wherein when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold, the system presents an indication to a user that the second light has failed.

6. The lighting system of claim 1, further comprising a processor associated with the occupancy sensor, the processor for receiving the lighting signal and for energizing an associated load when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level.

7. The lighting system of claim 6, wherein the associated load comprises the first light, and the system further comprises a plurality of second lights configured to be energized when the occupancy condition of the monitored area is determined by the occupancy sensor to be a vacant condition;

and

wherein the processor is programmed to transmit a signal to a building automation system when the lighting level is determined to be below a reduced lighting level, the reduced lighting level being greater than the predetermined threshold lighting level, the signal indicating an inspection of at least one of the associated load and the monitored area should be performed.

8. A lighting system, comprising:

an occupancy sensor for sensing an occupancy condition of a monitored area;

first and second lights for lighting at least a portion of the monitored area; and

a light sensor for providing a lighting signal representative of a lighting level of the monitored area;

wherein the second light is configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor fails to sense the presence of an occupant in the monitored area; and

wherein, regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area, the first light is energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level, and the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level being a lighting level associated with a failure of the second light.

9. The lighting system of claim 8, wherein the second light has a constant-on feature in which the second light is energized regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area.

10. The lighting system of claim 8, wherein when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold, the system presents an indication to a user that the second light has failed.

11. The lighting system of claim 8, further comprising a processor associated with the occupancy sensor, the processor programmed to receive the lighting signal and for commanding the first light to be energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level.

12. The lighting system of claim 11, wherein the second light comprises a plurality of second lights configured to be energized when the occupancy condition of the monitored area is determined by the occupancy sensor to be a vacant condition;

wherein the processor is programmed to transmit a signal to a building automation system when the lighting level is determined to be below a reduced lighting level, the reduced lighting level being greater than the predetermined threshold lighting level, the signal indicating an inspection of at least one of the plurality of second lights and the monitored area should be performed.

The lighting system of claim 11, wherein when the processor determines that the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level, the processor is programmed to send a periodic signal to a building automation system until an indication is received by the processor that the second light has been repaired or replaced.

The lighting system of claim 11, wherein when the processor determines that the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level, the processor commands a self-test in which the first light is de-energized and a lighting level is detected by the light sensor to determine whether the second light has been repaired or replaced within a pre-determined time period.

15. A lighting system, comprising:

an occupancy sensor for sensing an occupancy condition of a monitored area;

first and second lights for lighting at least a portion of the monitored area; and

a light sensor for providing a lighting signal representative of a lighting level of the monitored area;

wherein the second light is configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor fails to sense the presence of an occupant in the monitored area;

wherein, when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level, normal timeouts for the first light are overridden so that a constant ON condition exists for the first light; and

wherein the predetermined threshold lighting level is a lighting level associated with a failure of the second light.

16. The lighting system of claim 15, wherein the system is calibrated to instruct a processor associated with the occupancy sensor what the predetermined threshold lighting level is when the first light is not energized and the second light is energized.

17. The lighting system of claim 15, further comprising a processor associated with the occupancy sensor, the processor in communication with a building automation system to signal an alarm that the second light has failed when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level.

18. The lighting system of claim 17, wherein the processor is in communication with at least one of a public network and a private network to provide remote notification via an Internet web page the second light has failed.

19. The lighting system of claim 17, wherein the processor commands transmission of a text message or e-mail to a remote device notifying a user that the second light has failed.

20. A load control system, comprising:

an occupancy sensor for sensing an occupancy condition of a monitored area; and

a light sensor for providing a lighting signal representative of a lighting level of the monitored area,

wherein, regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area, an associated load is energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level,

wherein the associated load comprises a first light, and the system further comprises a second light configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor fails to sense the presence of an occupant in the monitored area, and

wherein when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold, the system presents an indication to a user that the second light has failed.

21. A load control system, comprising:

an occupancy sensor for sensing an occupancy condition of a monitored area;

a light sensor for providing a lighting signal representative of a lighting level of the monitored area, wherein, regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area, an associated load is energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level; and

a processor associated with the occupancy sensor, the processor for receiving the lighting signal and for energizing the load when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level,

wherein the associated load comprises a first light, and the system further comprises a plurality of second lights configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor fails to sense the presence of an occupant in the monitored area, and

wherein the processor is programmed to transmit a signal to a building automation system when the lighting level is determined to be below a reduced lighting level, the reduced lighting level being greater than the predetermined threshold lighting level, the signal indicating an inspection of at least one of the associated load and the monitored area is warranted.

22. A load control system, comprising:

an occupancy sensor for sensing an occupancy condition of a monitored area;

first and second lights for lighting at least a portion of the monitored area;

a light sensor for providing a lighting signal representative of a lighting level of the monitored area; and

a processor associated with the occupancy sensor, the processor programmed to receive the lighting signal and for commanding the first light to be energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level;

wherein the second light comprises a plurality of second lights configured to be energized when the occupancy condition of the monitored area is determined by the occupancy sensor to be a vacant condition; and

wherein the second light is configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor fails to sense the presence of an occupant in the monitored area;

wherein, regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area, the first light is energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level, the predetermined threshold lighting level being a lighting level associated with the second light;

wherein the processor is programmed to transmit a signal to a building automation system when the lighting level is determined to be below a reduced lighting level, the reduced lighting level being greater than the predetermined threshold lighting level, the signal indicating an inspection of at least one of the plurality of second lights and the monitored area is warranted.

23. A load control system, comprising:

an occupancy sensor for sensing an occupancy condition of a monitored area;

first and second lights for lighting at least a portion of the monitored area;

a light sensor for providing a lighting signal representative of a lighting level of the monitored area, and

a processor associated with the occupancy sensor, the processor programmed to receive the lighting signal and for commanding the first light to be energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level,

wherein the second light is configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor fails to sense the presence of an occupant in the monitored area;

wherein, regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area, the first light is energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level, the predetermined threshold lighting level being a lighting level associated with the second light; and

wherein when the processor determines that the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level, the processor is programmed to send a periodic signal to a building automation system until an indication is received by the processor that the second light has been repaired or replaced.

24. A load control system, comprising:

an occupancy sensor for sensing an occupancy condition of a monitored area;

first and second lights for lighting at least a portion of the monitored area;

a light sensor for providing a lighting signal representative of a lighting level of the monitored area, and

a processor associated with the occupancy sensor, the processor programmed to receive the lighting signal and for commanding the first light to be energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level,

wherein the second light is configured to be energized when the occupancy sensor fails to sense the presence of an occupant in the monitored area,

wherein, regardless of the occupancy condition of the monitored area, the first light is energized when the lighting signal indicates the lighting level is below a predetermined threshold lighting level;

the predetermined threshold lighting level being a lighting level associated with the second light; and

wherein when the processor determines that the lighting level is below the predetermined threshold lighting level, the processor commands a self-test in which the first light is de-energized and a lighting level is detected by the light sensor to determine whether the second light has been repaired or replaced within a pre-determined time period.
