1. A method of treating congestive heart failure using an implantable medical device, the method comprising:
- applying a first electrical signal during a first stimulation period and applying a second electrical signal during a second stimulation period to a cranial nerve, wherein;
the first electrical signal comprises;
a pulse frequency;
a first pulse width; and
a first pulse amplitude; and
the second electrical signal comprises;
a plurality of microbursts applied at a microburst frequency, wherein at least one microburst comprises a plurality of microburst pulses applied during a first microburst duration, wherein each microburst pulse comprises;
a second pulse width;
a pulse shape; and
a second pulse amplitude;
wherein the first pulse width is different than the second pulse width and the first pulse amplitude is different than the second pulse amplitude and wherein a microburst has a microburst characteristic where the microburst characteristic includes at least one of;
a number of electrical pulses being between 2 to 25 and a microburst duration of 10 milliseconds to 1 second.

Abstract
Disclosed herein are methods, systems, and apparatus for treating a medical condition in a patient using an implantable medical device by applying an electrical signal characterized by having a number of pulses per microburst, an interpulse interval, a microburst duration, and an interburst period to a portion of a cranial nerve of said patient, wherein at least one of the number of pulses per microburst, the interpulse interval, the microburst duration, or the interburst period is selected to enhance cranial nerve evoked potentials.
