Abstract

Keep alive management techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a keep alive interval is calculated by an operating system of the computing device. The keep alive interval is used to maintain one or more notification channels between one or more applications of the computing device and a network.

Claims

1. A method implemented by a computing device, the method comprising:

monitoring network traffic between the computing device and a network;

transitioning the computing device from a high power mode to a low power mode in response to determining that network traffic corresponding to one or more applications of the computing device has completed;

receiving a pre-registered notification; and

responsive to receiving the pre-registered notification, transitioning the computing device from the low power mode to the high power mode.

2. A method as described in claim 1, the transitioning the computing device from a high power mode to a low power mode comprising disabling outbound network transmission functionality of the computing device.

3. A method as described in claim 1, the computing device configured to enable transmission and receipt of data when the computing device is in the high power mode.

4. A method as described in claim 1, further comprising blocking communication of packets from one or more applications of the computing device while the computing device is in the low power mode.

5. A method as described in claim 1, the computing device comprising a plurality of network interfaces.

6. A method as described in claim 5, further comprising:

determining that a first network interface is in a high power mode; and

transitioning a second network interface to a low power mode responsive to determining that the first network interface is in a high power mode.

7. A method as described in claim 6, further comprising preventing communications through the second network interface while the second network interface is in the low power mode by routing communications through the first network interface.

8. A method as described in claim 6, wherein the computing device is a mobile communication device, the first network interface is a Wi-Fi network interface, and the second network interface is a cellular network interface.

9. A method as described in claim 1, the method further comprising:

maintaining connectivity between the computing device and the network while the computing device is in the low power mode comprising periodically waking the computing device from the low power mode at intervals to communicate with the network.

10. A method as described in claim 1, the pre-registered notification comprising one or more of an indication that a particular endpoint originated the notification or an indication of a four tuple pattern detected in the network traffic.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further includes:

maintaining connectivity between the device and the network while the device is in the low power mode.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further includes:

coalescing the pre-registered notification with other data received during a defined interval prior to transitioning the computing device from the low power mode to the high power mode.

13. A device comprising:

one or more modules implemented at least partially in hardware, the one or more modules configured to perform operations comprising;

monitoring network traffic between the device and a network;

transitioning the device from a high power mode to a low power mode in response to determining that network traffic corresponding to one or more applications of the computing device has completed;

receiving a pre-registered notification; and

responsive to receiving the pre-registered notification, transitioning the device from the low power mode to the high power mode.

14. A device as described in claim 13, the transitioning the device from a high power mode to a low power mode comprising disabling outbound network transmission functionality of the device.

15. A device as described in claim 13, the device configured to enable transmission and receipt of data when the computing device is in the high power mode.

16. A device as described in claim 13, the operations further comprising blocking communication of packets from one or more applications of the device while the device is in the low power mode.

17. A device as described in claim 13, wherein the device comprises a plurality of network interfaces.

18. A device as described in claim 17, the operations further comprising:

determining that a first network interface is in a high power mode; and

transitioning a second network interface to a low power mode responsive to determining that the first network interface is in a high power mode.

19. A device as described in claim 18, the operations further comprising preventing communications through the second network interface while the second network interface is in the low power mode by routing communications through the first network interface.

20. A device as described in claim 18, wherein the computing device is a mobile communication device, the first network interface is a Wi-Fi network interface, and the second network interface is a cellular network interface.

21. A device as described in claim 13, the method further comprising:

maintaining connectivity between the device and the network while the device is in the low power mode comprising periodically waking the computing device from the low power mode at intervals to communicate with the network.

A device as described in claim 13, the pre-registered notification comprising one or more of an indication that a particular endpoint originated the notification or an indication that a particular endpoint originated the notification or an indication of a four tuple pattern detected in the network traffic.

23. The device of claim 13, wherein the operations further include:

maintaining connectivity between the device and the network while the device is in the low power mode.

24. The device of claim 13, wherein the operations further include:

coalescing the pre-registered notification with other data received during a defined interval prior to transitioning the computing device from the low power mode to the high power mode.

25. One or more hardware storage device having stored computer-executable instructions which are executable by one or more processors of a computing device to cause the computing device to perform the following:

monitor network traffic between the computing device and a network;

transitioning the computing device from a high power mode to a low power mode in response to determining that network traffic corresponding to one or more applications of the computing device has completed;

receiving a pre-registered notification; and

responsive to receiving the pre-registered notification, transitioning the computing device from the low power mode to the high power mode.

26. The one or more hardware storage device of claim 25, wherein computer-executable instructions are further executable by the one or more processors to cause the computing device to maintain connectivity between the device and the network while the device is in the low power mode.

27. The one or more hardware storage device of claim 25, wherein computer-executable instructions are further executable by the one or more processors to cause the computing device to coalesce the pre-registered notification with other data received during a defined interval prior to transitioning the computing device from the low power mode to the high power mode.
