Abstract

A portable communications device, such as a mobile phone, includes a novel tactile alerting mechanism capable of alerting the user of an incoming communication or other event. A gyroscopic mechanism is coupled to a housing of the portable communications device and controlled by a processor. The processor is configured to control a spin velocity of the gyroscopic mechanism based on receiving an alert of an incoming call or message, or detecting a fall. The gyroscopic mechanism may spin up or change a spin state to provide a tactile signal via the housing of the communications device, by imparting stabilizing force to the housing that can be felt by a person wearing the communications device, or to change an orientation of the device while falling.

Claims

1. A wireless communications device, comprising:

a transceiver circuit configured to transmit and receive wireless communication signals, the circuit comprising a processor configured to detect an incoming signal in response to input received by the transceiver circuit;

a housing enclosing the transceiver circuit; and

a gyroscopic mechanism fixed to the housing and coupled to the processor for exerting a stabilizing force on a user, wherein the processor is configured to control a rotational velocity of the gyroscopic mechanism in response to detecting the incoming signal, based at least in part on a rigidity needed to signal the user.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the rotational velocity of the gyroscopic mechanism is lower when a level of a battery in the gyroscopic mechanism is low.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the rotational velocity of the gyroscopic mechanism is higher when a level of a battery in the gyroscopic mechanism is high or at a time of day just before the user typically charges the wireless communication device.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the gyroscopic mechanism spins down upon receipt of indicia that the wireless communications device is being answered.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a memory coupled to the processor configured to store frequencies at which the user perceives the incoming signal at respective ones of a plurality of rotational velocities.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the processor determines, based at least in part on the frequencies, a minimum rotational velocity necessary to get a desired rate of user perception to the incoming signal.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the minimum rotational velocity is further based on motion of the user.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the motion of the user comprises the amount, type and/or length of the motion.

9. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the minimum rotational velocity is further based on GPS data associated with the user.

10. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the minimum rotational velocity is further based on audio data associated with the user.

11. A system comprising:

a wireless communications device having a transceiver circuit configured to transmit and receive wireless communication signals, the circuit comprising a processor configured to detect an incoming signal in response to input received by the transceiver circuit;

a second device, wirelessly coupled to the wireless communications device;

a gyroscopic mechanism fixed to or incorporated into the second device, wherein the gyroscopic mechanism exerts a stabilizing force on the second device in response to the processor of the wireless communications device detecting the incoming signal.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the second device is wearable.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the second device is a watch.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the gyroscope is larger or draws more power than the wireless communications device.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the gyroscopic mechanism is a very small size and is affixed to a highly sensitive portion of a person'"'"'s body.

16. A method comprising:

receiving a GPS signal by a wireless communications device; and

activating, based on the GPS signal, a first gyroscopic mechanism coupled or fixed to the wireless communications device, the first gyroscopic mechanism configured to provide a first tactile alert signal exerting a first stabilizing force on a user of the wireless communications device, the first tactile alert signal indicating an action the user is to take with regard to a direction the user is heading.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the first gyroscopic mechanism is wirelessly coupled to the wireless communications device.

The method of claim 16, wherein the method further comprises, activating a vibrating mechanism fixed to the housing or incorporated into the wireless communications device, the vibrating mechanism configured to indicate an alternative action the user is to take with regard to the direction the user is heading.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the vibrating mechanism is further configured to vibrate in multiple vibration patterns, each of the multiple vibration patterns indicating a different action the user is to take with regard to the direction the user is heading.

20. The method of claim 16, further comprising a second gyroscopic mechanism wirelessly coupled to the wireless communication device, the second gyroscopic mechanism configured to provide a second tactile alert signal exerting a second stabilizing force on a user of the wireless communications device, the second tactile alert signal indicating an alternative action the user is to take with regard to the direction the user is heading.
