Method and apparatus for reshaping a ventricle
First Claim
1. A method of improving the function of a patient'"'"'s heart, comprising:
- delivering an implantable body into a left ventricle by a delivery catheter;
the implantable body comprising an anchor coupled to an elongate pusher member;
applying a force at the base of the left ventricle by causing the elongate pusher member to push against an inner wall of the left ventricle;
deploying the anchor adjacent a mitral valve for securing the elongate pusher member in the left ventricle and removing the delivery catheter from the heart while leaving the implantable body in the left ventricle;
wherein the pusher member reshapes the left ventricle by permanently elongating the left ventricle in a longitudinal direction for improving the pumping efficiency of the patient'"'"'s heart.

Abstract
Methods are provided for reshaping the left ventricle to a more conical shape to counter the effects of dilation, thereby improving pumping efficiency. In an exemplary embodiment, a reshaping apparatus comprises an implantable body that can be delivered to a dilated left ventricle via the patient'"'"'s vasculature in a minimally-invasive procedure. When deployed inside the left ventricle, the implantable body applies a longitudinal (downward) force against the inner surface of the left ventricle, thereby causing the left ventricle to distend or elongate downwardly. The implantable body preferably includes an anchor which is deployed adjacent the mitral valve for maintaining the longitudinal force against the inner surface of the left ventricle.

7. A method of improving the function of a patient'"'"'s heart, comprising:
-
delivering an implantable body into the left ventricle by a delivery catheter, the implantable body having an anchor member and an elongate pusher member permanently fixed to the anchor member, the pusher member having a length sized to extend from a mitral valve to an apex of the left ventricle, the anchor member sized for deployment adjacent the mitral valve, the pusher member extending along a longitudinal axis from the anchor member to the apex of the left ventricle, the pusher member having a distal end portion adapted to apply a longitudinal force to an inner surface of the heart at the apex of the left ventricle; ejecting the implantable body from the delivery catheter; expanding the anchor member for securing the anchor member adjacent the mitral valve; deploying the pusher member for applying the longitudinal force to the inner surface at the apex of the left ventricle, thereby permanently elongating the left ventricle and improving a pumping efficiency of the left ventricle; and
removing the delivery catheter from the heart while leaving the implantable body in the left ventricle. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9)
