1. A computer-implemented method for analyzing mobile handset based transactions between sender handsets and receiver handsets, the computer-implemented method comprising:

  • a computing system accessing and storing a mobile base station identifier that is generated in response to one or more SMS confirmation message being sent to a sender handset and a receiver handset as part of a mobile handset based transaction;

    the computing system determining locations of the sender handset and the receiver handset which were sent the one or more SMS confirmation for the mobile handset based transaction, the locations of the sender handset and the receiver handset being based on mobile base station information accessed with at least the mobile base station identifier, as well as being based on triangulation data associated with one or more additional mobile base stations, wherein determining at least one location of said locations is based on the mobile base station identifier without relying on GPS hardware of either the sender handset or the receiver handset, such that the at least one location is determined independently of any of the triangulation data;

    the computing system determining a geographical distribution of a plurality of mobile handset based transactions based on identified locations of a plurality of mobile handsets, including the sender handset and the receiver handset for a geographic region;

    the computing system accessing a baseline data set of mobile handset based transactions for the geographic region; and

    the computing system identifying anomalies between the determined geographical distribution with the baseline data set.
