1. A system for printing an identifier to, and reading an identifier from an object, the system comprising:
- a printing mechanism for printing a predefined fractal image to the object;
an imaging apparatus for imaging a portion of the printed fractal image from the object;
a processor for determining one or more attributes of the imaged portion of the printed fractal image; and
a comparator for comparing one or more expected attributes of the predefined fractal image with one or more determined corresponding attributes of the imaged portion of the printed fractal image.

Abstract
A method and system for applying and reading a fractal image to and from a plurality of objects to act as an identification label is provided. The system includes a printer for printing a fractal pattern to the plurality of objects and a reader for reading the printed fractal pattern. Such a fractal image is robust to printing and imaging difficulties and inconsistencies, and is difficult to copy, thus defending against counterfeiting.
