Abstract

A relay node is described herein, the relay node comprising a network connectivity device configured to receive a plurality of medium access control layer (MAC) packet data units (PDUs) from a plurality of user agents; a processor configured to multiplex the plurality of MAC PDUs to form a Super-MAC PDU; and wherein the network connectivity device is further configured to transmit the Super-MAC PDU to an access node.

Claims

1. A relay node for operating in a wireless communication network including an access node, wherein the relay node is configured to communicate wirelessly with the access node, the relay node comprising:

a processor configured to;

receive a first plurality of medium access control layer (MAC) packet data units (PDUs) from a plurality of user agents;

multiplex the first plurality of MAC PDUs to form a first MAC PDU;

transmit the first MAC PDU to the access node;

receive a second MAC PDU from the access node;

demultiplex the second MAC PDU into a second plurality of MAC PDUs;

transmit one or more of the second plurality of MAC PDUs to corresponding one or more of the plurality of user agents;

generate a single buffer status report (BSR) for multiple user agents based upon a total amount of data for uplink transmission; and

transmit the single BSR to the access node,

wherein the processor is further configured to monitor only one radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) for a scheduling grant, and wherein the RNTI corresponds to the relay node.

2. The relay node of claim 1 wherein the first and second MAC PDUs comprise a MAC PDU header, wherein the MAC PDU header includes a plurality of MAC PDU subheaders, and wherein ones of the MAC PDU subheaders correspond with ones of the plurality of MAC PDUs.

3. The relay node of claim 2 wherein a MAC PDU subheader comprises at least one of the following:

user agent Identity information;

a length of a corresponding MAC PDU; and

an extension indicator.

4. The relay node of claim 1, wherein the number of MAC PDUs that are multiplexed into the MAC PDU can vary depending on channel conditions, and wherein the relay node calculates the total amount of data based on data stored in buffers belonging to the multiple user agents.

5. The relay node of claim 1 wherein only one hybrid automatic-repeat-request (HARQ) is used with respect to transmitting the first MAC PDU that is formed by multiplexing the plurality of MAC PDUs.

6. The relay node of claim 5 wherein the processor is further configured to append the first MAC PDU with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits at the physical layer for error detection and correction.

7. A method implemented in a relay node, the method comprising:

receiving a first plurality of medium access control layer (MAC) packet data units (PDUs) from a plurality of user agents;

multiplexing the first plurality of MAC PDUs to form a first MAC PDU;

transmitting the first MAC PDU to an access node;

receiving a second MAC PDU from the access node;

demultiplexing the second MAC PDU into a second plurality of MAC PDUs;

transmitting one or more of the second plurality of MAC PDUs to corresponding one or more of the plurality of user agents;

generating a single buffer status report (BSR) for multiple user agents based upon a total amount of data for uplink transmission;

transmitting the single BSR to the access node; and

receiving an indication of a grant on a physical control channel using one relay node identification ID (RNID).

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the first MAC PDU comprises the plurality of MAC PDUs and a MAC PDU header that includes a plurality of MAC PDU subheaders, and wherein ones of the MAC PDU subheaders correspond with ones of the plurality of MAC PDUs.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein a MAC PDU subheader comprises at least one of the following:

user agent identity information;

a length of the corresponding MAC PDU; and

an extension indicator.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the number of MAC PDUs that are multiplexed into the MAC PDU can vary depending on channel conditions, and wherein the relay node calculates the total amount of data based on data stored in buffers of the multiple user agents.

11. The method of claim 7 further comprising:

monitoring one radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) for a scheduling grant, wherein the RNTI corresponds to the relay node.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

using only one hybrid automatic-repeat-request (HARQ) with respect to transmitting the first MAC PDU.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

appending the first Super-MAC PDU with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits at the physical layer for error detection and correction.

14. An access node comprising:

a processor configured to;

multiplex a first plurality of medium access control layer (MAC) packet data units (PDUs) into a first MAC PDU, wherein the first plurality of MAC PDUs are related to a plurality of user agents camped on a relay node; and

demultiplex a second MAC PDU received from the relay node, the second MAC PDU comprising a second plurality of MAC PDUs related to the plurality of user agents camped on the relay node; and

transmit a single physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) grant to the relay node, and not transmit PDCCH grants for the plurality of user agents camped on the relay node.

The access node of claim 14 wherein the first MAC PDU comprises the plurality of MAC PDUs and a MAC PDU header that includes a plurality of MAC PDU subheaders, and wherein ones of the MAC PDU subheaders correspond with ones of the plurality of MAC PDUs, and wherein the access node is further configured to transmit the first MAC PDU to the relay node.

16. The access node of claim 15 wherein a MAC PDU subheader comprises at least one of the following:

user agent identity information;

a length of the corresponding MAC PDU; and

an extension indicator.

17. The access node of claim 14 wherein the processor is further configured to receive a single buffer status report (BSR).

18. The access node of claim 17 wherein the processor is further configured such that one relay node identification (RN ID) is used on the PDCCH grant to the relay node from the access node.

19. The access node of claim 18 wherein the processor is further configured to provide one radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) for a scheduling grant, wherein the RNTI corresponds to the relay node.

20. The access node of claim 19 wherein only one hybrid automatic-repeat-request (HARQ) is used with respect to transmitting the first MAC PDU to the relay node.

21. The access node of claim 20 wherein the processor is further configured to append the first MAC PDU with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits at the physical layer for error detection and correction.

22. A method implemented in an access node, the method comprising:

multiplexing a plurality of medium access control layer (MAC) packet data units (PDUs) into a first MAC PDU, wherein the plurality of MAC PDUs are related to a plurality of user agents;

transmitting the first MAC PDU to a relay node;

receiving a second MAC PDU from the relay node; and

demultiplexing the second MAC PDU; and

transmitting a single physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) grant to the relay node, and not transmitting PDCCH grants for the plurality of user agents camped on the relay node.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein multiplexing is performed such that the first MAC PDU comprises the plurality of MAC PDUs and a MAC PDU header that includes a plurality of MAC PDU subheaders, and wherein ones of the MAC PDU subheaders correspond with ones of the plurality of MAC PDUs.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein a MAC PDU subheader comprises at least one of the following:

user agent identity information;

a length of the corresponding MAC PDU; and

an extension indicator.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein the number of MAC PDUs that are multiplexed into the MAC PDU can vary depending on channel conditions.

26. The method of claim 22 further comprising:

receiving a single buffer status report (BSR).

27. The method of claim 26 further comprising:

using one relay node identification (RN ID) on the PDCCH grant to the relay node from the access node.

28. The method of claim 27 further comprising:

providing one radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) for a scheduling grant, wherein the RNTI corresponds to the relay node.

29. The method of claim 28 further comprising:

appending the first MAC PDU with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits at the physical layer for error detection and correction.
