Gait analysis system and methods
First Claim
1. A system for providing a sensory indication of a balanced or an imbalanced condition in the gait cycle of an ambulatory individual wearing a left shoe and a right shoe, the system comprising:
- (a) a first sensor array configured to be positioned in a left shoe, wherein the first sensor array includes one or both of a plurality of pressure sensors and a plurality of shear stress sensors;
(b) a second sensor array configured to be positioned in a right shoe, wherein the second sensor array includes one or both of a plurality of pressure sensors and a plurality of shear stress sensors; and
(c) a data collection and analysis system configured to;
(i) receive data from the first and second sensor arrays;
(ii) analyze the data to identify the balanced or imbalanced condition; and
(iii) generate an output of the balanced or imbalanced condition to the individual;
(d) wherein the first array of sensors and the second array of sensors includes pressure sensors and wherein the data collection and analysis system identifies a balanced or an imbalanced condition by comparing data received from the pressure sensors in the first sensor array to data received from the pressure sensors in the second sensor array.

Abstract
Systems and methods for analyzing the gait of an individual are disclosed. The disclosed systems and methods can be configured to acquire data from a first array and a second array of sensors that are configured to be placed in a left and/or right shoe, respectively. The acquired data can be collected or separated into at least two separate gait phases for each array, compared to a baseline condition for each gait phase and categorized into one of at least two uniformity categories for each gait phase. Examples of collected and/or calculated data include pressure values, shear stress values and torque values. The analysis can be focused on both feet of a person, or focused on one foot. A graphical output showing at least one entire gait cycle based on the uniformity categories can then be generated.
