Abstract

Inflatable medical devices and methods for making and using the same are disclosed. The devices can be medical invasive balloons, such as those used for transcutaneous heart valve implantation, such as balloons used for transcatheter aortic-valve implantation. The balloons can have high strength, fiber-reinforced walls.

Claims

1. An inflatable medical device comprising:

a balloon comprising a constant-diameter section disposed between proximal and distal tapered sections arranged longitudinally along a longitudinal axis;

the balloon comprising a wall comprising a first layer extending over the constant-diameter section and the proximal and distal tapered sections, the first layer comprising a group of reinforcement fibers, each reinforcement fiber in the group of reinforcement fibers extending in the constant-diameter section and the proximal or distal tapered sections;

wherein each fiber in the group of reinforcement fibers is substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis and has a length less than 75% of a distance from a proximal end to a distal end of the balloon; and

wherein the group of reinforcement fibers comprises a first fiber and a second fiber arranged and configured within the wall such that a tensile load applied to the balloon transfers from the first fiber to the second fiber within the constant diameter section as a shearing load.

2. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein the first fiber is longitudinally non-concurrent with the second fiber.

3. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein a distal end of the first fiber and a proximal end of the second fiber are located in the constant diameter section.

4. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein a majority of the reinforcement fibers in the group of reinforcement fibers are adapted to transmit a tensile load as a shearing load to other reinforcement fibers within the constant-diameter section.

5. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein the first layer comprises a single layer of reinforcement fibers.

6. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein the balloon wall is configured to carry above 70% of a tensile load in the balloon through shear within the constant diameter section.

7. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein each fiber of the group of reinforcement fibers extends less than 60% of the distance from the proximal end to the distal end of the inflatable medical device.

8. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein one or more of the fibers of the group of reinforcement fibers have separations between aligned segments of the fibers.

9. The inflatable medical device of claim 8, wherein the separations are less than 2 mm in length.

10. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein the first fiber is adjacent to the second fiber.

11. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein the first fiber layer comprises a matrix, the matrix including the group of reinforcement fibers and a resin.

12. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein the wall further comprises a second layer comprising a polymer, the first layer surrounding and reinforcing the second layer.

13. The inflatable medical device of claim 12, wherein the wall further comprises a third layer comprising a second group of fibers, wherein the second group of fibers are wound radially along the longitudinal axis of the balloon substantially over the entire length of the balloon.

14. The inflatable medical device of claim 12, wherein the wall further comprises a third layer comprising a film surrounding the first layer.

15. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein the wall further includes a plurality of separation areas, the separation areas separating fibers of the group of reinforcement fibers along the longitudinal axis.

16. The inflatable medical device of claim 15, wherein the separation areas are arranged within the wall such that no separation area substantially overlaps any other separation area along the longitudinal axis or along an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

17. The inflatable medical device of claim 15, wherein the tensile load transfers from the first fiber to the second fiber as a shearing load.

18. The inflatable medical device of claim 17, wherein a shear load length along the longitudinal axis is at least two times a length of a neighboring separation area.

19. The inflatable medical device of claim 1, wherein the fibers in the group of reinforcement fibers are arranged such that the balloon is configured to expand in a longitudinal direction while a stress of each of the fibers is maintained at less than 10% of the yield stress.

20. An inflatable medical device comprising:

a balloon comprising a constant-diameter section disposed between proximal and distal tapered sections arranged longitudinally along a longitudinal axis of the device;

the balloon comprising a wall comprising a first layer extending over the constant-diameter section and the proximal and distal tapered sections, the first layer comprising a group of reinforcement fibers;

wherein each fiber in the group of reinforcement fibers is substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis and has a length less than 75% of a distance from a proximal end to a distal end of the balloon; and

wherein the group of reinforcement fibers comprises a first fiber extending in the constant-diameter section and the proximal tapered section and a second fiber extending in the constant-diameter section and the distal tapered section, the first and second fibers configured within the wall such that a tensile load applied to the balloon transfers from the first fiber to the second fiber within the constant diameter section.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the first fiber is longitudinally non-concurrent with the second fiber in the constant-diameter section.

22. An inflatable medical device comprising:

a balloon comprising a section having a substantially constant diameter disposed between proximal and distal tapered sections arranged longitudinally along a longitudinal axis of the device;

the balloon comprising a wall comprising a first layer extending over the constant-diameter section and the proximal and distal tapered sections, the first layer comprising a group of reinforcement fibers including at least one fiber extending in the constant-diameter section from the proximal to distal tapered sections;

wherein each fiber in the group of reinforcement fibers is substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the device and has a length less than 75% of the distance from a proximal end to a distal end of the inflatable medical device; and

wherein the group of reinforcement fibers comprises a first fiber and a second fiber arranged and configured within the wall such that a tensile load applied to the balloon transfers from the first fiber to the second fiber within the constant diameter section.

23. The inflatable medical device of claim 22, wherein the at least one fiber comprises the first fiber or the second fiber.
