Abstract

A medical system and method can used to treat a bone. The system and method can include the preparation of bone cement to be used in the treatment. A non-liquid component and a liquid component can be combined to form a bone cement. A vacuum system can be used to saturate the non-liquid component with the liquid component. The bone cement and/or components can be heated and/or cooled.

Claims

1. A method of preparing a bone cement for treating a bone comprising the steps of:

providing a first liquid component and a second non-liquid component of a curable bone cement;

controlling the temperature of one or more of the bone cement components with a control system prior to combining the components in at least one container within a selected narrow temperature range; and

subsequent to controlling the temperature, applying a partial vacuum to the at least one container to cause the non-liquid component to be saturated with the liquid component while maintaining particles of the non-liquid component within the at least one container, such that the first liquid component and the second non-liquid component form the bone cement.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the at least one container comprises an elongated member, wherein the non-liquid component is carried within each elongated member.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein each elongated member carries the non-liquid component in an elongated volume defined by the elongated member.

The method of claim 1, wherein the control system comprises at least one of an inductive heating system, a resistive heating system, a light energy heating system, a heated air or gas circulating system, an RF heating system, a microwave heating system, a magnetic heating system, and a heated liquid circulating system.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the control system is configured to convectively heat the bone cement component by heating a member that contains the bone cement component, or by heating a structure or space that is in thermally coupled to the member that contains the bone cement component.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein controlling the temperature is performed by a computer control system.

7. The method of claim 1, controlling the temperature comprises placing the components into temperature regulating members.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein applying a partial vacuum to the non-liquid component to saturate the non-liquid component with the liquid component forms a bone cement.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising injecting the bone cement into a site at or near the bone.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein controlling the temperature of the one or more of the bone cement components comprises controlling the temperature of the first liquid component prior to combining the first liquid component and the second non-liquid component.

11. A method of treating a patient comprising:

placing at least one container of a non-liquid polymer powder component within a first temperature regulating member;

placing a container of a liquid monomer component into a second temperature regulating member;

heating the liquid monomer component via the second temperature regulating member;

pouring the heated liquid monomer component into each of the at least one container of the non-liquid polymer powder component;

subsequent to heating the liquid, applying suction to each of the at least one container of the non-liquid polymer powder component to cause the powder to be saturated with the liquid so that the non-liquid polymer powder component and the liquid monomer component form a bone cement and thus at least one container of bone cement; and

removing each of the at least one container of bone cement from the temperature regulating member and injecting the bone cement into a bone of the patient.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising cooling the at least one container of bone cement.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising injecting bone cement from at least a second container into the bone of the patient.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein each of the least one container of the non-liquid polymer powder component comprises an elongated member, wherein the non-liquid polymer powder component is carried within each elongated member.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein each elongated member carries the non-liquid polymer powder component in an elongated an elongated volume defined by the elongated member.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the temperature regulating member comprises at least one of an inductive heating system, a resistive heating system, a light energy heating system, a heated air or gas circulating system, an RF heating system, a microwave heating system, a magnetic heating system, and a heated liquid circulating system.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein the temperature regulating member is configured to convectively heat the liquid monomer component by heating a member that contains the liquid monomer component, or by heating a structure or space that is thermally coupled to the member that contains the liquid monomer component.

18. The method of claim 11 wherein heating the liquid monomer component is controlled by a computer control system.

19. A method of preparing a bone cement for treating a bone comprising the steps of:

providing a liquid component and a non-liquid component of a curable bone cement;

controlling the temperature of the liquid component prior to combining the liquid component and the non-liquid component in at least one container within a selected narrow temperature range; and

after controlling the temperature of the liquid component, combining the liquid and non-liquid components by introducing the liquid component into a first end of each of the at least one container and applying a negative pressure to a second end of the each of the at least one container, wherein the first and second ends are opposing ends of the each of the at least one container,

wherein applying the negative pressure comprises applying a partial vacuum to the non-liquid component to saturate the non-liquid component with the liquid component while maintaining particles of the non-liquid component within the at least one container.
