Abstract

A computing device can automatically generate a flow diagram showing statuses that objects in a system can possess, and the possible transitions between these statuses. Using snapshots of database data, the device can determine how the statuses of these objects have changed over time. The device can analyze the data to suggest which database fields likely represent object status. The device can render the flow diagram to illustrate system states at different selected times. Each rendered flow diagram can indicate, for the selected time point, the quantity of objects that possessed each status at that time, and, for a selected time interval, the quantity of objects that changed from each status to each other status during that time interval. The statuses can be represented in the flow diagram as status bubbles having sizes that are based on the quantities of objects have those bubble'"'"'s statuses at the selected time point.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving a first user input that specifies a first status from a set of statuses;

in response to receiving the first user input, displaying, on a screen of a device, a first flow element corresponding to the first status;

receiving a second user input that specifies a second status from the set of statuses;

in response to receiving the second user input, displaying, on the screen, a second flow element corresponding to the second status;

receiving a third user input that relates the first flow element to the second flow element;

in response to receiving the third user input, determining a quantity of objects that changed status from the first status to the second status;

displaying, on the screen, a directional indicator that connects the first flow element to the second flow element and that indicates a direction of flow from the first the first flow element to the second flow element and

displaying, on the screen, an indication of the quantity of objects.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the receiving the third user input includes detecting a dragging motion from the first flow element to the second flow element.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein determining the quantity of objects that changed status from the first status to the second status comprises determining a quantity of objects that changed statuses from the first status to the second status during a time period from within a plurality of time periods.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3, further comprising:

querying one or more database tables to determine the quantity of objects that changed statuses from the first status to the second status during the time period.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4, wherein querying the one or more database tables comprises querying a database snapshot that corresponds to the time period;

and wherein the database snapshot is one of a plurality of database snapshots periodically generated from transactional data.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5, wherein querying the one or more database tables further comprises performing a join of sets of database records from two different snapshots from the plurality of database snapshots;

and wherein the quantity is determined based at least in part on a count of records produced by the join.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a first quantity of objects that changed status from the first status to the second status during a first time period;

determining a second quantity of objects that changed status from the first status to the second status during a second time period that differs from the first time period; and

wherein the indication of the quantity of objects indicates both the first quantity and the second quantity.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7, wherein the indication of the quantity of objects includes a line graph having plotted points visually representing the first quantity and the second quantity relative to a timeline.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving a first user input that specifies a first status from a set of statuses;

in response to receiving the first user input, displaying, on a screen of a device, a first flow element corresponding to the first status;

receiving a second user input that specifies a second status from the set of statuses;

in response to receiving the second user input, displaying, on the screen, a second flow element corresponding to the second status;

receiving a third user input that relates the first flow element to the second flow element;

in response to receiving the third user input, determining a quantity of objects that changed status from the first status to the second status;

displaying, on the screen, a directional indicator that connects the first flow element to the second flow element and that indicates a direction of flow from the first the first flow element to the second flow element and

displaying, on the screen, an indication of the quantity of objects.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the receiving the third user input includes detecting a dragging motion on the screen from the first flow element to the second flow element.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein determining the quantity of objects that changed status from the first status to the second status comprises determining a quantity of objects that changed statuses from the first status to the second status during a time period from within a plurality of time periods.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11, said operations further comprising:

querying one or more database tables to determine the quantity of objects that changed statuses from the first status to the second status during the time period.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein querying the one or more database tables comprises querying a database snapshot that corresponds to the time period;

and wherein the database snapshot is one of a plurality of database snapshots periodically generated from transactional data.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein querying the one or more database tables further comprises performing a join of sets of database records from two different snapshots from the plurality of database snapshots;

and wherein the quantity is determined based at least in part on a count of records produced by the join.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9, said operations further comprising:

determining a first quantity of objects that changed status from the first status to the second status during a first time period;

determining a second quantity of objects that changed status from the first status to the second status during a second time period that differs from the first time period; and

wherein the indication of the quantity of objects indicates both the first quantity and the second quantity.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15, wherein the indication of the quantity of objects includes a line graph having plotted points visually representing the first quantity and the second quantity relative to a timeline.
