Abstract

Techniques have been developed for transmitting and receiving information conveyed through the air from one portable device to another as a generally unperceivable coding within an otherwise recognizable acoustic signal. For example, in some embodiments in accordance with the present invention(s), information is acoustically communicated from a first handheld device toward a second by encoding the information in a signal that, when converted into acoustic energy at an acoustic transducer of the first handheld device, is characterized in that the acoustic energy is discernable to a human ear yet the encoding of the information therein is generally not perceivable by the human. The acoustic energy is transmitted from the acoustic transducer of the first handheld device toward the second handheld device across an air gap that constitutes a substantially entirety of the distance between the devices. Acoustic energy received at the second handheld device may then be processed using signal processing techniques tailored to detection of the particular information encodings employed.

Claims

1. A peer-to-peer method of acoustically communicating information between a first device and a second device, the method comprising:

receiving at an acoustic transducer of the first device acoustic energy, wherein information encoded in the acoustic energy is not perceivable by a human ear;

extracting, at the first device, the encoded information from the acoustic energy; and

pairing, based on the encoded information extracted from the acoustic energy, with the second device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the acoustic energy is characterized in that the acoustic energy is discernable to the human ear.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein extracting the encoded information further comprises:

detecting a first frequency component in the acoustic energy; and

determining, based on detecting the first frequency component, that the acoustic energy is from the second device.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein extracting the encoded information further comprises:

converting the acoustic energy into a digital signal; and

processing the digital signal to identify one or more frequency components of interest, wherein the first frequency component is of the one or more frequency components of interest.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein extracting the encoded information further comprises:

detecting an absence of a first frequency component; and

determining, based on detecting the absence of the first frequency component, that the acoustic energy is from the second device.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

encoding second information in a signal that, when converted into second acoustic energy at the acoustic transducer of the first device, is characterized in that the encoding of the second information is not perceivable by a human ear.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the encoded information includes a passcode for pairing with the second device.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the encoded information includes a peer indication for pairing with the second device.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the peer indication includes a passcode for pairing with the second device.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein extracting the encoded information includes determining, based on whether the acoustic energy includes a first frequency component, that the acoustic energy is from the second device.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the information is encoded as frequency modulations of one or more constituent tones of the acoustic signal, and the frequency modulations in the acoustic energy are not perceivable by the human ear.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the information is encoded as phase modulations of one or more constituent tones of the acoustic signal, and the phase modulations in the acoustic energy are not perceivable by the human ear.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein the information is encoded as amplitude modulations of one or more constituent tones of the acoustic signal, and the amplitude modulations in the acoustic energy are not perceivable by the human ear.

10. A computing device, comprising:

an acoustic transducer that receives acoustic energy, wherein information encoded in the acoustic energy is not perceivable by a human ear;

one or more filters that extracts the encoded information from the acoustic energy; and

a detector that pairs, based on the encoded information extracted from the acoustic energy, the computing device with a second device.

11. The computing device of claim 10, wherein the acoustic energy is characterized in that the acoustic energy is discernable to the human ear.

12. The computing device of claim 10, further comprising:

emitter code that encodes second information in a signal that, when converted into second acoustic energy at the acoustic transducer of the computing device, is characterized in that the encoding of the second information is not perceivable by a human ear.

13. The computing device of claim 12, wherein the acoustic transducer transmits the second acoustic energy from the first acoustic transducer of the computing device toward the second device across an air gap that constitutes a substantially entirety of the distance therebetween.

14. The computing device of claim 10, wherein the encoded information includes a passcode for pairing with the second device.

15. The computing device of claim 10, wherein the encoded information includes a peer indication for pairing with the second device.

16. The computing device of claim 10, wherein the first and second devices are portable devices.
