Abstract

An implant delivery system is disclosed. The delivery system includes an elongated member having an implant mounting location. A self-expandable implant is mounted at the implant mounting location. The implant is held in a compressed orientation by a retractable sheath. An interlock structure prevents the implant from deploying prematurely as the sheath is retracted. The interlock structure includes radio-opaque markers that identify the position of the implant.

Claims

1. A medical device, comprising:

an implant including a plurality of struts having terminal ends on opposite ends of the implant, wherein at each end of the opposite ends of the implant, a respective first interlock structure including an enlargement projects outwardly from at least one of the terminal ends on the respective end of the implant; and

an implant delivery system including;

an elongate member including second interlock structures, the second interlock structures each being configured to couple with a respective one of the first interlock structures, the second interlock structures including a first set of second interlock structures configured to couple with first interlock structures on one end of the implant and a second set of second interlock structures configured to couple with first interlock structures on the other end of the implant, at least one of the second interlock structures including a receptacle dimensioned to receive the enlargement of the respective first interlock structure such that an outer periphery of the enlargement is disposed at least partially within the receptacle; and

a retractable sheath configured to substantially surround at least a portion of at least one of the first interlock structures and at least a portion of a respective one of the second interlock structures to keep the at least one of the first interlock structures and the respective one of the second interlock structures engaged to prevent release of the implant while the retractable sheath is substantially surrounding the at least the portion of the at least one of the first interlock structures and the at least the portion of the respective one of the second interlock structures.

2. The medical device according to claim 1 wherein a plurality of the terminal ends of the struts each includes a respective first interlock structure comprising a respective radiopaque marker.

3. The medical device according to claim 2 wherein each end of the implant includes a plurality of the first interlock structures each dimensioned to couple with a respective second interlock structure of the elongate member.

4. The medical device according to claim 1 wherein the implant is positioned over the elongate member proximal to a distal end of the elongate member.

5. The medical device according to claim 4 wherein the distal end of the elongate member includes a tapered and flexible distal tip member.

6. The medical device according to claim 1 further comprising at least one radiopaque marker attached to at least one of the first interlock structures.

7. The medical device according to claim 6 wherein the at least one radiopaque marker is attached to the at least one of the first interlock structures by at least one of an adhesive, heat fusion, interference fit, a fastener, or an intermediate member.

8. The medical device according to claim 1 wherein at least some of the first interlock structures comprise a radiopaque marker and at least one of the radiopaque markers is made from a material having greater radiopacity than the material forming the plurality of struts.

9. The medical device according to claim 1, wherein at least some of the first interlock structures comprise a radiopaque marker and at least one of the radiopaque markers is made from at least one of tantalum, platinum, gold, tungsten, or alloys thereof.

10. The medical device according to claim 1 wherein each first interlock structure comprises a radiopaque marker.

11. The medical device according to claim 1 wherein the implant is a self-expanding implant.

12. A medical device, comprising:

an implant including a plurality of struts having terminal ends on opposite ends of the implant, wherein at each end of the opposite ends of the implant, a respective first interlock structure including an enlargement projects outwardly from at least one of the terminal ends on the respective end of the implant; and

an implant delivery system including;

an elongate member defining a longitudinal axis and including second interlock structures, the second interlock structures each dimensioned to couple with respective first interlock structures of radially adjacent terminal ends of the implant, the second interlock structures including a first set of second interlock structures configured to couple with first interlock structures on a first end of the opposite ends of the implant and a second set of second interlock structures configured to couple with first interlock structures on a second end of the opposite ends of the implant, at least one of the second interlock structures including a receptacle dimensioned to receive the first interlock structures of the radially adjacent terminal ends of the implant such that outer peripheries of the enlargements of the first interlock structures are disposed at least partially within the receptacle; and

a retractable sheath configured to substantially surround at least a portion of the first interlock structures of radially adjacent terminal ends and at least a portion of a respective one of the second interlock structures to keep the first interlock structures of radially adjacent terminal ends and the respective one of the second interlock structures engaged to prevent release of the implant while the retractable sheath is substantially surrounding the at least the portion of the first interlock structures of radially adjacent terminal ends and the at least the portion of the respective one of the second interlock structures.

13. The medical device according to claim 12 wherein the implant is positioned over the elongate member proximal to a distal end of the elongate member.

14. The medical device according to claim 13 wherein the distal end of the elongate member includes a tapered and flexible distal tip member.

15. The medical device according to claim 12 further comprising at least one radiopaque marker attached to a respective first interlock structure.

16. The medical device according to claim 15 wherein each radiopaque marker is attached to the respective first interlock structure by at least one of an adhesive, heat fusion, interference fit, a fastener, or an intermediate member.

17. The medical device according to claim 12 wherein at least some of the first interlock structures comprise a radiopaque marker and each radiopaque marker is made from a material having greater radiopacity than the material forming the plurality of struts.

18. The medical device according to claim 12, wherein at least some of the first interlock structures comprise a radiopaque marker and each radiopaque marker is made from at least one of tantalum, platinum, gold, tungsten, or alloys thereof.

19. The medical device according to claim 12 wherein each of the terminal ends on each of the opposite ends of the implant each includes the respective first interlock structure comprising a radiopaque marker.
