1. A method of establishing bi-directional communication between a position indicator and a position detecting sensor, comprising:

  • transmitting a first signal from a tip transmitter/receiver provided at a tip end of an elongate body of the position indicator, wherein the first signal is indicative of a position of the tip end;

    transmitting a second signal from a proximal transmitter/receiver provided at a proximal end of the elongate body of the position indicator, wherein the second signal is indicative of a position of the proximal end;

    receiving, by at least one of the tip receiver and the proximal receiver of the position indicator, a sensor signal outputted from the position detecting sensor during a time period in which neither the first signal nor the second signal is transmitted; and

    selecting between the transmitting of the first signal and the transmitting of the second signal based on reception of the sensor signal.
