Electronically monitored safety lockout devices, systems and methods
First Claim
1. A system for monitoring a lockout condition of a component, the system comprising:
- a padlock having a lock body and a shackle assembled with the lock body and manually moveable between a locked position secured with the lock body and an unlocked position separable from the lock body;
a lockout device configured to be assembled with the component and manually moveable between a lockout condition blocking operation of the component and an access condition permitting operation of the component, the lockout device including a housing defining a lock aperture sized to receive the padlock shackle therethrough, such that the padlock shackle secures the lockout device in the lockout condition, with the padlock being secured to the lockout device when the shackle is in the locked position;
wherein the lockout device comprises a communication module disposed in the housing and configured to communicate a data signal including an identification code identifying the lockout device, and a sensor switch disposed in the housing and configured to be actuated when the padlock shackle is inserted through the lock aperture, to activate the communication module; and
a reader separate from the lockout device, the reader being configured to receive the data signal when the reader is placed in proximity with the communication module, at least when the lockout device is in the lockout condition and the padlock shackle is inserted through the lock aperture of the lockout device and manually moved to the locked position.

Abstract
A system for monitoring a lockout condition of a component includes a lockout device, a lock unit, and a reader. The lockout device is moveable between a lockout condition blocking operation of the component and an access condition permitting operation of the component. The lock unit is configured to be secured to a lockout interface of the lockout device to secure the lockout device in the lockout condition. One of the lockout device and the lock unit includes a communication module configured to communicate a data signal including an identification code identifying the one of the lockout device and the lock unit. The reader is remote from the one of the lockout device and the lock unit, and is configured to receive the data signal at least when the lockout device is assembled with the component and the lock unit is secured to the lockout interface of the lockout device.

10. A method of monitoring lockout procedures for a multi-process arrangement having first and second components, the method comprising:

inserting a first shackle of a first padlock through a first lock aperture of a first lockout device and manually moving the first shackle to a locked position with a lock body of the first padlock to secure the first padlock to the first lockout device with the first component in a lockout condition to block operation of the first component; actuating a first sensor switch in the first lockout device in response to insertion of the first shackle through the first lock aperture; generating a first data signal in response to actuation of the first sensor switch, the first data signal including at least a first identification code corresponding to the first lockout device; inserting a second shackle of a second padlock through a second lock aperture of a second lockout device, separate from the first lockout device, and manually moving the second shackle to a locked position with a lock body of the second padlock to secure the second padlock to the second lockout device with the second component in a lockout condition to block operation of the second component; actuating a second sensor switch in the second lockout device in response to insertion of the second shackle through the second lock aperture; generating a second data signal in response to actuation of the second sensor switch, the second data signal including at least a second identification code corresponding to the second lockout device; monitoring the first and second data signals to determine an order in which the first and second lockout devices have been locked out; and comparing the order in which the first and second lockout devices have been locked out with a predefined lockout procedure, and providing an alert if the order is inconsistent with the predefined lockout procedure. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22)

23. A method of monitoring lockout procedures, the method comprising:

inserting a shackle of a padlock through a lock aperture of a lockout device and manually moving the shackle to a locked position with a lock body of the padlock to secure the padlock to the lockout device in a lockout condition; actuating a sensor switch in the lockout device in response to insertion of the shackle through the lock aperture; generating a data signal in response to actuation of the sensor switch, the data signal including an identification code corresponding to one of the padlock and the lockout device.

a housing; a lock aperture defined by the housing and sized to receive a padlock shackle therethrough, such that the padlock shackle secures the lockout device in the lockout condition; a communication module disposed in the housing and configured to communicate a data signal including an identification code identifying the lockout device; and a sensor switch disposed in the housing and configured to be actuated when the padlock shackle is inserted through the lock aperture, to activate the communication module.
