Abstract

An ECG monitoring system for ambulatory patients includes a small multi-electrode patch that adhesively attaches to the chest of a patient. A reusable battery-powered ECG monitor clips onto the patch and receives patient electrical signals from the electrodes of the patch. A processor continuously processes received ECG signals and stores the signals in memory in the monitor. The processor also analyzes the received ECG signals for predefined arrhythmia. If an arrhythmia is detected, a wireless transceiver in the ECG monitor transmits the event information and an ECG strip to a cellphone handset. The cellphone handset automatically relays the event information and ECG strip to a monitoring center for further diagnosis and necessary intervention.

Claims

1. A wireless cardiac monitoring system for ambulatory patients comprising:

a disposable electrode patch having an adhesive surface for attachment to the skin of a patient at a location at which multiple ECG signals are to be acquired and including multiple integral electrodes;

a reusable, battery powered ECG monitor adapted to mount to the electrode patch in electrical communication with the multiple electrodes, the ECG monitor including a memory for storing ECG signal data and a transceiver for wirelessly transmitting ECG signal data and receiving information signals; and

a cellphone handset including cellphone electronics operable for communication over a cellular network, a transceiver for wirelessly receiving ECG signal data from the ECG monitor and transmitting information signals received from a monitoring center to the ECG monitor, a memory for storing ECG signal data, and a controller operable to automatically control the cellphone electronics to send ECG signal data received from the ECG monitor to the monitoring center over the cellular network,

wherein the electrode patch further comprises an electrical connector internally electrically connected to the multiple electrodes, the electrical connector also having a plurality of electrical contacts on an outward-facing side of the patch,

wherein there are no wires extending beyond the periphery of the electrode patch.

2. The cardiac monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the electrode patch further comprises a bracket adapted to retain the ECG monitor in a predetermined orientation on the patch;

wherein the ECG monitor further comprises a plurality of external contacts; and

wherein, when the ECG monitor is mounted to the patch in the predetermined orientation, the external contacts are aligned to engage the electrical connector of the electrode patch.

3. The cardiac monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the electrode patch is keyed to retain the ECG monitor in the predetermined orientation;

and

wherein the ECG monitor is keyed to engage the keying of the electrode patch in the predetermined orientation.

4. The cardiac monitoring system of claim 2, wherein the electrode patch is adapted to provide a tactile indication to a user when the ECG monitor is retained in the predetermined orientation.

5. The cardiac monitoring system of claim 4, wherein the ECG monitor snaps into the bracket when mounted to the electrode patch in the predetermined orientation.

6. The cardiac monitoring system of claim 1, wherein the ECG monitor transceiver further comprises a Bluetooth radio;

and

wherein the cellphone handset transceiver further comprises a Bluetooth radio.

7. The cardiac monitoring system of claim 6, wherein the Bluetooth radio of the ECG monitor is operated in a low power mode when not transmitting data to or receiving data from the Bluetooth radio of the cellphone handset.

8. The cardiac monitoring system of claim 7, wherein the low power mode comprises a sniff mode.
