Abstract

A system and method for adjusting light emitter output for a railway track inspection system based on data feedback from one or more sensors.

Claims

1. A system for inspecting a railway track, the system comprising:

a power source;

a light emitting apparatus powered by the power source for emitting light energy toward a railway track;

a data storage apparatus in communication with a processor;

at least one sensor for sensing reflected light emitted from the light emitting apparatus and acquiring three dimensional range and intensity data of the railway track to be stored in the data storage apparatus; and

the processor wherein the processor includes an algorithm for adjusting the power of the light emitting apparatus, the algorithm comprising the steps of;

a. calculating one or more intensity histograms for an at least one sensor channel; and

b. adjusting a light emitter control output value based at least in part on the calculated one or more intensity histograms; and

a controller in communication with the processor wherein the controller is configured to control the light intensity of the light emitting apparatus in response to the light emitter control output value.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the algorithm for adjusting the power of the light emitting apparatus further comprises the step of calculating one or more aggregate intensity histograms for a target zone.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the target zone further comprises at least one surface zone including one or more members selected from the group consisting of a gage tie zone, a rail zone, a field tie zone, and a field ballast zone.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein the algorithm for adjusting the power of the light emitting apparatus further comprises the steps of calculating a median histogram for the target zone and adjusting a light emitter control output value based at least in part on the calculated median histogram.

The system of claim 4 wherein the algorithm for adjusting the power of the light emitting apparatus further comprises the steps of calculating aggregate zero value error counts for the target zone and adjusting a light emitter control output value based at least in part on the calculated aggregate zero value error counts.

The system of claim 4 wherein the algorithm for adjusting the power of the light emitting apparatus further comprises the steps of calculating aggregate out-of-range error counts for the target zone and adjusting a light emitter control output value based at least in part on the calculated aggregate out-of-range error counts.

7. The system of claim 5 wherein the algorithm for adjusting the power of the light emitting apparatus further comprises the step of determining whether the number of zero value errors are greater than a zero value error count number threshold.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the algorithm for adjusting the power of the light emitting apparatus further comprises the step of determining whether the number of out-of-range errors are greater than a range error count number threshold.

9. A method of inspecting a railway track bed using a light source with real time adjustable light emission the method comprising the steps of:

a. emitting light from a light source toward a railway track bed;

b. detecting light reflected from the railway track bed using at least one sensor;

c. calculating at least one intensity histogram for the at least one sensor channel;

d. adjusting a light emitter control output value based on the calculated at least one intensity histogram; and

e. controlling the light intensity of the light emitting apparatus in response to the adjusted light control output value.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of calculating at least one intensity histogram further comprises the step of calculating aggregate intensity histograms for a target zone.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of calculating at least one intensity histogram further comprises the step of calculating a median histogram for the target zone.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein in the step of adjusting a light emitter control output value further comprises the step of adjusting a light emitter control output value based on the calculated median histogram.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of calculating a median histogram further comprises calculating a median histogram for a plurality of surface zones.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of calculating aggregate intensity histograms further comprises calculating aggregate intensity histograms for a plurality of surface zones.

15. The method of claim 9 further comprising the steps of calculating zero value errors for at least one sensor channel and determining whether the number of zero value errors are greater than a zero error count number threshold.

16. The method of claim 9 further comprising the steps of calculating out-of-range errors for at least one sensor channel and determining whether the number of out-of-range errors are greater than a range error count number threshold.
