Abstract

A method and system of providing therapy to a patient using electrodes implanted adjacent tissue. The method comprises regulating a first voltage at an anode of the electrodes relative to the tissue, regulating a second voltage at a cathode of the electrodes relative to the tissue, and conveying electrical stimulation energy between the anode at the first voltage and the cathode at the second voltage, thereby stimulating the neural tissue. The system comprises a grounding electrode configured for being placed in contact with the tissue, electrical terminals configured for being respectively coupled to the electrodes, a first regulator configured for being electrically coupled between an anode of the electrodes and the grounding electrode, a second regulator configured for being electrically coupled between an anode of the electrodes and the grounding electrode, and control circuitry configured for controlling the regulators to convey electrical stimulation energy between the anode and cathode.

Claims

1. A method of providing therapy to a patient using an array of electrodes implanted adjacent neural tissue of the patient and a grounding electrode in contact with the neural tissue, the method comprising:

regulating a first non-zero voltage at an anode of the electrodes relative to the grounding electrode in contact with the neural tissue, wherein the anode is different than the grounding electrode;

regulating a second non-zero voltage at a cathode of the electrodes relative to the grounding electrode in contact with the neural tissue, wherein the cathode is different than the grounding electrode; and

conveying electrical stimulation energy between the anode at the first non-zero voltage and the cathode at the second non-zero voltage, thereby stimulating the neural tissue, wherein the grounding electrode prevents voltage shifts within analog output circuitry from being conducted to the anode and cathode differentially.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising

regulating a first current flowing through the anode;

and

regulating a second current flowing through the cathode.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising determining values for the first current and the second current necessary to achieve the first and second voltages.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first voltage on the anode shifts upward relative to the neural tissue the same amount as the second voltage on the cathode shifts downward relative to the neural tissue.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the neural tissue is spinal cord tissue.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising implanting the array of electrodes within the patient.

7. A neurostimulation system, comprising

a grounding electrode configured for being placed in contact with neural tissue;

a plurality of electrical terminals configured for being respectively coupled to an array of electrodes;

a first regulator configured for being electrically coupled between an anode of the electrodes and the grounding electrode, wherein the anode is different than the grounding electrode;

a second regulator configured for being electrically coupled between a cathode of the electrodes and the grounding electrode, wherein the cathode is different than the grounding electrode; and

control circuitry configured for controlling the first and second regulators to convey electrical stimulation energy between the anode and the cathode.

8. The neurostimulation system of claim 7, wherein each of the first and second regulators comprises a voltage source.

9. The neurostimulation system of claim 7, wherein each of the first and second regulators comprises a current source.

10. The neurostimulation system of claim 9, wherein the control circuitry is further configured for determining values for the first current and the second current necessary to achieve the first and second voltages.

11. The neurostimulation system of claim 7, wherein the control circuitry is configured for controlling the regulators to prevent voltage shifts within analog output circuitry from being conducted to the anode and the cathode differentially.

12. The neurostimulation system of claim 11, wherein the control circuitry is configured for controlling the regulators to shift the voltage on the anode upward relative to the grounding electrode the same amount as the voltage on the cathode shifts downward relative to the grounding electrode.

13. The neurostimulation system of claim 7, further comprising the array of electrodes.

14. The neurostimulation system of claim 7, further comprising a housing containing the plurality of electrical terminals, first and second voltage regulators, and control circuitry.

15. A method of providing therapy to a patient using an array of electrodes implanted adjacent neural tissue of the patient and a ground electrode placed in contact with the neural tissue, the method comprising

regulating electrical stimulation energy at an anode of the electrodes relative to the neural tissue using a first regulator electrically coupled between the anode and the grounding electrode, wherein the anode is different than the grounding electrode;

regulating electrical stimulation energy at a cathode of the electrodes relative to the neural tissue using a second regulator electrically coupled between the cathode of the electrodes and the grounding electrode, wherein the cathode is different than the grounding electrode; and

conveying electrical stimulation energy between the anode and the cathode, thereby stimulating the neural tissue.

The method of claim 15, wherein regulating electrical stimulation energy at the anode includes regulating a first voltage using a first voltage source coupled between the anode and the grounding electrode and regulating electrical stimulation energy at the cathode includes regulating a second voltage using a second voltage source coupled between the cathode and the grounding electrode.

The method of claim 15, wherein regulating electrical stimulation energy at the anode includes regulating a first current using a first current source coupled between the anode and the grounding electrode and regulating electrical stimulation energy at the cathode includes regulating a second current using a second current source coupled between the cathode and the grounding electrode.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the neural tissue is spinal cord tissue.

19. The method of claim 15, further comprising regulating electrical stimulation energy at a second anode using a third regulator coupled between the second anode and the grounding electrode, and regulating electrical stimulation energy at a second cathode using a fourth regulator coupled between the second cathode and the grounding electrode, wherein the second anode and second cathode are different than the grounding electrode.
