Abstract

A pavement repair system utilizing solid phase auto regenerative cohesion and homogenization by liquid asphalt oligopolymerization technologies. The system is suitable for use in repairing asphalt pavement, including pavement exhibiting a high degree of deterioration (as manifested in the presence of potholes, cracks, ruts, or the like) as well as pavement that has been subject to previous repair and may comprise a substantial amount of dirt and other debris (e.g., chipped road paint or other damaged or disturbed surfacing materials). A system utilizing homogenization by liquid asphalt oligopolymerization is suitable for rejuvenating or repairing aged asphalt, thereby improving properties of the paving material.

Claims

1. A method for providing a road with a wearing surface, comprising:

providing a paving material comprising an asphalt binder and an aggregate;

irradiating the paving material with radiation having a preselected peak wavelength of from 1,000 nm to 10,000 nm, wherein the peak wavelength of the radiation is selected based on at least one criterion selected from the group consisting of absorbed wavelength quanta data related to a stone petrography of the aggregate, an asphaltene/maltene content of the asphalt binder, and data from testing conducted on representative samples of the paving material; and

applying the irradiated paving material to a road base, whereby the road base is provided with a wearing surface.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the paving material comprises a granite rock, and wherein the preselected peak wavelength is from 3,000 nm to 5,000 nm.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the paving material comprises a limestone, and wherein the preselected peak wavelength is from 3,000 nm to 4,000 nm.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the paving material comprises a sand, and wherein the preselected peak wavelength is from 5,000 nm to 8,000 nm.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the paving material comprises recycled asphalt pavement.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the aggregate comprises recycled asphalt pavement.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the aggregate is a graded stone, and wherein the graded stone is coated with a 3-5 mil layer of the asphalt binder.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising subjecting the wearing surface to vibratory compaction.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising installing a binder primer or a levelling course on the road base prior to applying the irradiated paving material to the road base.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the road base is an existing asphalt pavement.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the road base is selected from the group consisting of an existing concrete pavement, a gravel road base, and an earthen base covered with gravel that has been graded and compacted.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the road base is a damaged asphalt pavement.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein applying the paving material to the road base comprises re-installing the irradiated paving material on a same road from which the paving material was removed.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising applying liquid asphalt to the aggregate to yield a paving material comprising a mixture of 95% aggregate and 5% asphalt, wherein the liquid asphalt is applied to the aggregate by spraying into a pug mill or by drum coating.

15. A method for providing a road with a wearing surface, comprising:

providing a paving material comprising an asphalt binder and an aggregate;

irradiating the paving material with radiation having a first preselected peak wavelength of from 1,000 nm to 10,000 nm;

irradiating the paving material with a second radiation having a second preselected peak wavelength of from 1 mm to 5 mm; and

applying the irradiated paving material to a road base, whereby the road base is provided with a wearing surface.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the second preselected peak wavelength is from 2 mm to 5 mm.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the paving material or the aggregate comprises recycled asphalt pavement.

18. A method for providing a road with a wearing surface, comprising:

providing a paving material comprising an asphalt binder and an aggregate;

irradiating the paving material with radiation having a preselected peak wavelength of from 1,000 nm to 10,000 nm; and

applying the irradiated paving material to a road base, whereby the road base is provided with a wearing surface, wherein the peak wavelength of the radiation is selected such that the radiation penetrates through and heats the paving material, wherein a temperature differential throughout the paving material is 100°

F. or less, wherein a highest temperature in the paving material does not exceed 300°

F., and wherein a minimum temperature in the paving material is at least 200°

F.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the paving material or the aggregate comprises recycled asphalt pavement.

20. A method for providing a road with a wearing surface, comprising:

providing a paving material comprising an asphalt binder and an aggregate;

irradiating the paving material with radiation having a preselected peak wavelength of from 1,000 nm to 10,000 nm; and

applying the irradiated paving material to a road base, whereby the road base is provided with a wearing surface, wherein the radiation is generated by an emitter, wherein the emitter comprises an emitter panel comprising a birefringent material through which an electromagnetic radiation generated by the emitter passes, wherein the birefringent material exhibits biaxial birefringence.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the paving material or the aggregate comprises recycled asphalt pavement.

22. A method for providing a paving material, comprising:

providing an asphalt binder and an aggregate; and

irradiating the asphalt binder and the aggregate with radiation having a preselected peak wavelength of from 1,000 nm to 10,000 nm, whereby a paving material is provided, wherein the peak wavelength of the radiation is selected based on at least one criterion selected from the group consisting of absorbed wavelength quanta data related to a stone petrography of the aggregate, an asphaltene/maltene content of the asphalt binder, and data from testing conducted on representative samples of the paving material.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the aggregate comprises recycled asphalt pavement.

24. A method for providing a paving material, comprising:

providing an asphalt binder and an aggregate; and

irradiating the asphalt binder and the aggregate with radiation having a preselected peak wavelength of from 1,000 nm to 10,000 nm, whereby a paving material is provided, wherein the radiation is generated by an emitter, wherein the emitter comprises an emitter panel comprising a birefringent material through which an electromagnetic radiation generated by the emitter passes, wherein the birefringent material exhibits biaxial birefringence.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the aggregate comprises recycled asphalt pavement.

26. A method for providing a paving material, comprising:

providing an asphalt binder and an aggregate;

irradiating the asphalt binder and the aggregate with radiation having a preselected peak wavelength of from 1,000 nm to 10,000 nm; and

irradiating the asphalt binder and the aggregate with a second radiation having a second preselected peak wavelength of from 1 mm to 5 mm, whereby a paving material is provided whereby the preselected wavelength is selected based on at least one criterion selected from the group consisting of stone petrography of the aggregate, an asphaltene/maltene content of the asphalt binder, and testing data conducted on representative samples.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the second preselected peak wavelength is from 2 mm to 5 mm.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein the aggregate comprises recycled asphalt pavement.

29. A method for providing a paving material, comprising:

providing an asphalt binder and an aggregate; and

irradiating the asphalt binder and the aggregate with radiation having a preselected peak wavelength of from 1,000 nm to 10,000 nm, whereby a paving material is provided, wherein the peak wavelength of the radiation is selected such that the radiation penetrates through and heats the paving material, wherein a temperature differential throughout the paving material is 100°

F. or less, wherein a highest temperature in the paving material does not exceed 300°

F., and wherein a minimum temperature in the paving material is at least 200°

F. whereby the preselected wavelength is selected based on at least one criterion selected from the group consisting of stone petrography of the aggregate, an asphaltene/maltene content of the asphalt binder, and testing data conducted on representative samples.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the aggregate comprises recycled asphalt pavement.
