Abstract

A power manager including a power bus operable at a DC bus voltage. A plurality of device ports operably connect to the power bus. A first data processing device and a first memory device are associated with the first data processing device. A data communication channel extends between the first data processing device and each of the plurality of device ports. An energy management schema operates on the first data processing device. For each of the plurality of device ports, the energy management schema establishes a communication link with an external power device connected to the device port over the data communication channel and determines if an external power device is connected to the device port and if so, determines an external power device type.

Claims

1. A power manager comprising:

a power bus operable at a DC bus voltage;

a plurality of device ports operably connectable to the power bus;

a first data processing device and a first memory device associated with the first data processing device;

a data communication channel extending between the first data processing device and each of the plurality of device ports;

an energy management schema operating on the first data processing device;

wherein for each of the plurality of device ports, the energy management schema establishes a communication link with an external power device connected to the device port over the data communication channel and determines if an external power device is connected to the device port and if so, determines an external power device type and

each of the plurality of device ports further comprises;

a first power channel disposed between the device port and the power bus; and

a first controllable switching element operable by the data processing device disposed along the first power channel between the device port and the power bus.

2. The power manager of claim 1 further comprising one or more communication interface devices operable to communicate with external power devices connected to device ports using one or more different communication protocols.

3. The power manager of claim 2 wherein the one or more different communication protocols comprises at least one network communication protocol.

4. The power manager of claim 2 wherein the one or more different communication protocols comprises any one of the SMBus, IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet) and Inter-Integrated Circuit (IIC) communication protocols.

5. The power manager of claim 2 wherein the one or more different communication protocols comprises any one of the Universal Serial Bus (USB), RS-232 and the RS485 communication protocols.

6. The power manager of claim 1 wherein the first power channel is a bidirectional power channel.

7. The power manager of claim 6 further comprising for each of the plurality of device ports a second power channel over which the device port can be operably connected to the power bus.

8. The power manager of claim 7 wherein the second power channel includes a DC to DC power converter and at least one second controllable switching element each operable by the data processing device.

9. The power manager of claim 8 wherein at least one second power channel includes an input power converter for converting a non-bus compatible DC voltage received from a power source connected to one of the plurality of device ports to the DC bus voltage.

10. The power manager of claim 9 wherein the at least one second power channel that includes an input power converter is shared by two device ports.

11. The power manager of claim 10 wherein each external power device connected to one of the plurality of device ports comprises;

a cable electrically interfaced with the external power device and with one of the plurality of device ports, wherein the cable includes a power channel and a communication channel; and

,

a digital data storage element associated with one of the external power device and the cable wherein data representing power characteristics of the external power device that is interpretable by the first data processing device over the communication channel is stored thereon.

12. The power manager of claim 9 wherein the input power converter is operable to convert input voltages in the range of 4 to 34 VDC to the DC bus voltage.

13. The power manager of claim 8 wherein at least one second power channel includes an output power converter for converting the DC bus voltage received from the power bus to a non-bus compatible DC voltage suitable for powering a power load connected to one of the plurality of device ports.

14. The power manager of claim 13 wherein the at least one second power channel that includes an output power converter is shared by at least two device ports.

15. The power manager of claim 13 wherein the output power converter is operable to convert the DC bus voltage to output voltages in the range of 10 to 24 VDC.

The power manager of claim 8 wherein for each external power device connected to one of the plurality of device ports having an operating voltage range that includes the DC bus voltage the energy management schema operates to connect the external power device directly to the power bus over the first power channel associated with the device port.

The power manager of claim 8 wherein for each external power device connected to one of the plurality of device ports having an operating voltage range that does not include the DC bus voltage the energy management schema operates to determine if the external power device can be connected to the power bus over the second power channel associated with the device port.

The power manager of claim 1 wherein each external power device is individually addressable and the first data processing device comprises a power network controlled by the energy management schema wherein the energy management schema operates to establish a network configuration comprising at least one power source delivering an input power signal to the power bus, and at least one power load receiving an output power signal from the power bus.

The power manager of claim 18 further comprising a second power manager connected to one of the plurality of device ports wherein the second power manager and any second external power devices connected to the second power manager are individually addressable by the first data processing device.

20. The power manager of claim 18 wherein the energy management schema operates to alter the network configuration in response to triggering events.

21. The power manager of claim 20 wherein the triggering event includes any one of physically connecting an external power device to or disconnecting an external power device from a device port.

22. The power manager of claim 21 wherein the energy management schema operates to periodically repeat the operating sequence of claim 21 at a periodic refresh rate.

The power manager of claim 20 wherein the triggering event includes any one of a change in available input power, a change in output power demand, exceeding an operating current amplitude of one of the external power devices, exceeding an operating temperature range of one of the external power devices.

24. The power manager of claim 1 further comprising:

a low voltage sensor for generating a low voltage signal in response to the DC bus voltage falling below a low threshold value; and

a hot change over circuit acting independently of the first data processing device to connect at least one external power source that is disconnected from the power bus to the power bus in response to the low voltage signal.

The power manager of claim 24 further comprising a first rechargeable energy storage device connected to one of the plurality device ports exclusively powering the power bus wherein the low voltage threshold value is selected to utilize more than 90% of the available charge capacity of the first rechargeable energy storage device before triggering the hot changeover circuit.

26. The power manager of claim 1 wherein the DC bus voltage is substantially centered around one of 15 and 30 VDC.

27. A power manager comprising:

a power bus operable at a DC bus voltage;

a plurality of device ports operably connectable to the power bus;

a first data processing device and a first memory device associated with the first data processing device;

a data communication channel extending between the first data processing device and each of the plurality of device ports;

an energy management schema operating on the first data processing device;

wherein for each of the plurality of device ports, the energy management schema establishes a communication link with an external power device connected to the device port over the data communication channel and determines if an external power device is connected to the device port and if so, determines an external power device type and

wherein the energy management schema operates to;

characterize each external power device as one of, a power load and a power or energy source;

associate the power loads with a power allocation interface;

associate the power of energy sources with a source allocation interface;

calculate a total power available from the source allocation interface;

allocate the total power available to the power allocation interface;

connect as many power loads to the power bus as can be powered by the total power available;

disconnect power loads from the power bus that cannot be powered by the total power available; and

connect the power or energy sources to the power bus that are associated with the source allocation interface.
