Abstract

The tissue cutting device comprises an elongated assembly including both an outer sleeve and an inner sleeve. The outer sleeve has a tissue-receiving window, and the inner sleeve has a distal end which cuts tissue as the inner sleeve is advanced past the window. The tissue is received into a lumen of the inner sleeve, and the inner sleeve lumen is typically enlarged in a proximal direction to reduce the tendency of resected tissue to lodge therein. The tissue displacement member is optionally provided at a distal end of the outer sleeve to further aid in dislodging tissue which becomes captured in a distal end of the inner sleeve of the lumen.

Claims

1. A tissue resecting device comprising:

an elongated shaft assembly including;

an outer sleeve having a lumen extending therethrough and a tissue-receiving window opening into the lumen of the outer sleeve; and

an inner sleeve disposed in the lumen of the outer sleeve and arranged to reciprocate relative to the outer sleeve, the inner sleeve including an elongate tubular member, an electrode sleeve positioned at a distal end of the inner sleeve and a ceramic collar surrounding a portion of the electrode sleeve.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein a portion of the electrode sleeve extends distally beyond the ceramic collar.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the portion of the electrode sleeve extending distally beyond the ceramic collar defines an electrode edge configured to generate a plasma thereat.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the electrode sleeve serves as a first polarity electrode and a portion of the outer sleeve serves as a second polarity electrode of a bipolar electrode pair.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the electrode sleeve has an inner diameter and the elongate tubular member has an inner diameter, wherein the inner diameter of the elongate tubular member is greater than the inner diameter of the electrode sleeve.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the elongate tubular member serves an electrical pathway for passing radio frequency energy to the electrode sleeve.

7. The device of claim 6, further comprising an electrically insulative layer along an exterior of the elongate tubular member.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the inner sleeve defines a tissue extraction lumen extending therethrough.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the tissue extraction lumen extends through the electrode sleeve.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein a proximal portion of the electrode sleeve is positioned within a distal end portion of the elongate tubular member.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the ceramic collar is positioned distal of a distal end of the elongate tubular member.

12. A tissue resecting device comprising:

an elongated shaft assembly including;

an outer sleeve having a lumen extending therethrough and a tissue-receiving window opening into the lumen of the outer sleeve; and

an inner sleeve disposed in the lumen of the outer sleeve and arranged to reciprocate relative to the outer sleeve, the inner sleeve including an elongate tubular member, an electrode sleeve extending distally beyond a distal end of the elongate tubular member, and a collar surrounding a portion of the electrode sleeve;

wherein reciprocation of the inner sleeve relative to the outer sleeve causes the electrode sleeve to move between a fully retracted position to a fully advanced position.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein a portion of the electrode sleeve extends distally beyond the collar.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein the electrode sleeve serves as a first polarity electrode and a portion of the outer sleeve serves as a second polarity electrode of a bipolar electrode pair.

15. The device of claim 13, wherein the portion of the electrode sleeve extending distally beyond the collar defines an electrode edge configured to generate a plasma thereat.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein the electrode edge is positioned proximal of the tissue-receiving window in the fully retracted position and the electrode edge is positioned distal of the tissue-receiving window in the fully advanced position.

17. The device of claim 12, wherein the electrode sleeve has an inner diameter and the elongate tubular member has an inner diameter, wherein the inner diameter of the elongate tubular member is greater than the inner diameter of the electrode sleeve.

18. The device of claim 12, wherein a proximal portion of the electrode sleeve is positioned within a distal end portion of the elongate tubular member.

19. The device of claim 12, wherein the collar is positioned distal of a distal end of the elongate tubular member.

20. The device of claim 12, wherein the inner sleeve defines a tissue extraction lumen extending therethrough.
