Abstract

An oscillating positive respiratory pressure apparatus and a method of performing oscillating positive respiratory pressure therapy. The apparatus includes a housing having an interior chamber, a chamber inlet, a chamber outlet, an exhalation flow path defined between the inlet and the outlet, and a restrictor member rotatably mounted within the interior chamber. The restrictor member has an axis of rotation that is substantially perpendicular to the flow path at the inlet, and includes at least one blocking segment. Rotation of the restrictor member moves the at least one blocking segment between an open position and a closed position. Respiratory pressure at the chamber inlet oscillates between a minimum when the at least one blocking segment is in the open position and a maximum when the at least one blocking segment is in the closed position. By exhaling into the apparatus, oscillating positive expiratory pressure therapy is administered.

Claims

1. A respiratory treatment device comprising:

a housing having a chamber;

a chamber inlet configured to receive air into the chamber;

a chamber outlet configured to permit air to exit the chamber;

a user interface in communication with the chamber inlet;

a restrictor member mounted within the interior of the chamber, the restrictor member being movable relative to the chamber inlet between a closed position where the flow of air through the chamber inlet is restricted, and an open position where the flow of air through the chamber inlet is less restricted;

a respiratory portal substantially aligned with the user interface, the respiratory portal being configured to receive an aerosol medicament from a nebulizer configured to deliver aerosol therapy; and

,

a one-way valve configured to permit the aerosol medicament to enter the respiratory portal;

wherein the one-way valve is configured to remain closed for the administration of oscillating positive expiratory pressure therapy during a period of exhalation, and remain open for administration of aerosol therapy during a period of inhalation; and

,

wherein the restrictor member has an axis of rotation substantially perpendicular to a flow of air passing through the inlet and is rotatable through a complete revolution.

2. The respiratory treatment device of claim 1, wherein the restrictor member comprises at least one blocking segment.

3. The respiratory treatment device of claim 1, wherein the restrictor member comprises a plurality of vanes configured to rotate the restrictor member in response to the flow of air through the chamber inlet.

4. The respiratory treatment device of claim 1, wherein an inhalation flow path defined between the respiratory portal and the user interface does not pass through the chamber inlet.

5. The respiratory treatment device of claim 1, wherein an inhalation flow path defined between the respiratory portal and the user interface is substantially unobstructed.

6. The respiratory treatment device of claim 1, wherein an inhalation flow path defined between the respiratory portal and the user interface is substantially straight.

7. A respiratory treatment device comprising:

a housing having a chamber;

a chamber inlet configured to receive air into the chamber;

a chamber outlet configured to permit air to exit the chamber;

a user interface in communication with the chamber inlet;

a restrictor member mounted within the interior of the chamber, the restrictor member having a plurality of vanes configured to rotate the restrictor member relative to the chamber inlet, in response to the flow of air through the chamber inlet, between a closed position where the flow of air through the chamber inlet is restricted, and an open position where the flow of air through the chamber inlet is less restricted;

a respiratory portal in communication with the user interface, the respiratory portal being configured to receive an aerosol medicament from a nebulizer configured to deliver aerosol therapy; and

,

a one-way valve configured to permit the aerosol medicament to enter the respiratory portal;

wherein the one-way valve is configured to remain closed for the administration of oscillating positive expiratory pressure therapy during a period of exhalation, and remain open for administration of aerosol therapy during a period of inhalation; and

,

wherein the restrictor member has an axis of rotation substantially perpendicular to a flow of air passing through the inlet and is rotatable through a complete revolution.

8. The respiratory treatment device of claim 7, wherein the restrictor member comprises at least one blocking segment.

9. The respiratory treatment device of claim 7, wherein the restrictor member comprises a plurality of blocking segments.

10. The respiratory treatment device of claim 7, wherein an inhalation flow path defined between the respiratory portal and the user interface does not pass through the chamber inlet.

11. The respiratory treatment device of claim 7, wherein an inhalation flow path defined between the respiratory portal and the user interface is substantially unobstructed.

12. The respiratory treatment device of claim 7, wherein an inhalation flow path defined between the respiratory portal and the user interface is substantially straight.

13. A method of performing oscillating positive expiratory pressure therapy and aerosol therapy during a respiratory cycle, the method comprising:

passing a flow of air during a period of exhalation through an inlet of a chamber in an oscillating positive expiratory pressure device;

rotating a restrictor member having a plurality of vanes configured to rotate the restrictor member relative to the chamber inlet, in response to the flow of air through the chamber inlet, between a closed position where the flow of air through the inlet is restricted, and an open position where the flow of air through the inlet is less restricted;

passing a flow of air during a period of inhalation along a substantially straight inhalation flow path defined between a user interface and a respiratory portal configured to receive an aerosol medicament from a nebulizer configured to deliver aerosol therapy; and

drawing the aerosol medicament from the nebulizer via the respiratory portal in response to inhalation at the user interface;

wherein the restrictor member has an axis of rotation substantially perpendicular to a flow of air passing through the inlet and is rotatable through a complete revolution.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising opening a one-way valve positioned in the inhalation flow path during the period of inhalation, and closing the one-way valve during the period of exhalation.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the inhalation flow path does not pass through the chamber inlet.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the inhalation flow path is substantially unobstructed.
