Abstract

A system for establishing an intramedullary path includes a body sized and configured to be received within a resected bone space. The body defines a first aperture that extends through the body and is sized and configured to receive a surgical tool therethrough. A first bone engaging structure extends from the body in a first direction and includes a first surface that is complementary to a surface topography of a first bone. When the first surface of the bone engaging structure engages the surface topography of the first bone to which the first surface is complementary, an axis defined by the first aperture is substantially collinear with a mechanical axis of the first bone.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a surgical mount having a hollow interior and being sized and configured to be received between a first bone and a second bone, the surgical mount including

a first side, a second side, a third side, and a fourth side, the first side being spaced apart from the second side, the third side being spaced apart from the fourth side, and the third and fourth sides each extending between the first and second sides;

an engagement structure extending from the third side and including a conformal engagement surface that is complementary to a surface topography of at least a portion of the first bone,

wherein the first side, the third side, and the fourth side each define a respective aperture that communicates with the hollow interior.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the first bone is a tibia and the second bone is a talus.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the third side includes at least one angled surface that conforms to a resected surface of the first bone.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a first cartridge having a body sized and configured to be received through the aperture defined by the first side of the surgical mount and within the hollow interior of the surgical mount.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the first cartridge defines a hole that is sized and configured to receive a reamer therein.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the hole extends from a bottom side of the body of the first cartridge to a top side of the first cartridge.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein, when the first cartridge is received within the surgical mount, the hole is accessible via the aperture defined by the third side of the surgical mount and via the aperture defined by the fourth side of the surgical mount.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the hole tapers from a first diameter at the bottom surface of the body to a second diameter at a location between the bottom surface and the top surface of the body.

9. The system of claim 4, wherein the body of the first cartridge has a geometry such that it can be received in the aperture defined by the first side of the surgical mount in a single orientation.

10. The system of claim 4, wherein the body of the first cartridge defines a hole that inwardly extends from a front surface of the body.

11. The system of claim 5, wherein the body of the first cartridge defines a pair of parallel slots each disposed at a distance from the hole defined by first cartridge.

12. A system, comprising:

a surgical mount having a hollow interior and being sized and configured to be received between a first bone and a second bone, the surgical mount including

a first side, a second side, a third side, and a fourth side, the first side being spaced apart from the second side, the third side being spaced apart from the fourth side, and the third and fourth sides each extending between the first and second sides, wherein the first side, the third side, and the fourth side each define a respective aperture that communicates with the hollow interior, and

an engagement structure extending above an uppermost surface of the third side and including a conformal engagement surface that is complementary to a surface topography of at least a portion of an anterior surface of the first bone; and

at least one cartridge having a body sized and configured to be received through the aperture defined by the first side of the surgical mount and within the hollow interior of the surgical mount.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the third side includes at least one angled surface that conforms to a resected surface of the first bone.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the at least one cartridge defines a hole that is sized and configured to receive a reamer therein.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the hole extends from a bottom side of the body of the at least one cartridge to a top side of the at least one cartridge.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein, when the at least one cartridge is received within the surgical mount, the hole is accessible via the aperture defined by the third side of the surgical mount and via the aperture defined by the fourth side of the surgical mount.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the hole tapers from a first diameter at the bottom surface of the body to a second diameter at a location between the bottom surface and the top surface of the body.

18. The system of claim 12, wherein the body of the at least one cartridge has a geometry such that it can be received in the aperture defined by the first side of the surgical mount in a single orientation.

19. The system of claim 12, wherein the body of the at least one cartridge defines a hole that inwardly extends from a front surface of the body.

20. The system of claim 14, wherein the body of the at least one cartridge defines a pair of parallel slots each disposed at a distance from the hole defined by at least one cartridge.

21. A method, comprising:

inserting a surgical mount having a hollow interior between a first bone and a second bone until a conformal surface of an engagement structure that extends from a third side of the surgical mount contacts the first bone, the conformal surface of the engagement structure being complementary to a surface topography of at least a portion of the first bone, the surgical mount including

a first side, a second side, and a fourth side, the first side being spaced apart from the second side, the third side being spaced apart from the fourth side, and the third and fourth sides each extending between the first and second sides, wherein the first side, the third side, and the fourth side each define a respective aperture that communicates with the hollow interior; and

inserting a first cartridge into the hollow interior of the surgical mount via the aperture defined by the first side of the surgical mount.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising

resecting at least the first bone prior to inserting the surgical mount;

and

inserting a reamer through a hole defined by the first cartridge, at least the aperture defined by the third side, and into the first bone.

23. A system, comprising:

a surgical mount having a hollow interior and being sized and configured to be received between a tibia bone and a talus bone, the surgical mount including

a first side, a second side, a third side, and a fourth side, the first side being spaced apart from the second side, the third side being spaced apart from the fourth side, and the third and fourth sides each extending between the first and second sides;

an engagement structure extending from the third side and including a conformal engagement surface that is configured to engage at least a portion of an anterior surface of the tibia,

wherein the first side, the third side, and the fourth side each define a respective aperture that communicates with the hollow interior.
