1. A method of ablating target tissue of a patient comprising:
- placing an array of electrodes of a medical device defining a major longitudinal axis on or near the targeted tissue, the array of electrodes including a flexible carrier assembly on which the array of electrodes is disposed, the flexible carrier assembly including a plurality of resilient arms, each arm having a proximal arm segment and a distal arm segment joined to each other at a bend point, and when the flexible carrier assembly is in a fully deployed configuration, the array of electrodes defines a substantially planar surface substantially orthogonal to the major longitudinal axis, the medical device having an elongate body, a control shaft within the elongate body, and a coupler coupling the control shaft to the flexible carrier assembly, the coupler including at least one projection to prevent rotation of the flexible carrier assembly;
placing a conductive pad in contact with a part of the patient'"'"'s body other than the targeted tissue;
conducting electrical energy from a first electrode of the array through the target tissue to at least a second electrode of the array in a bipolar manner without conducting electrical energy to the conductive pad; and
conducting electrical energy from at least one of the electrodes of the array through the target tissue to the conductive pad in a monopolar manner without conducting electrical energy from the first electrode to the second electrode.

Abstract
Devices, systems and methods are disclosed for the ablation of tissue. Embodiments include an ablation catheter which has an array of ablation elements attached to a deployable carrier assembly. The carrier assembly can be constrained within the lumen of a catheter, and deployed to take on an expanded condition.
