1. A method for generating a physical layer (PHY) data unit for transmission via a communication channel, the PHY data unit conforming to a first communication protocol, the method comprising:
- generating, at a first communication device, a first plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols for a first field of a preamble to be included in the PHY data unit, wherein each OFDM symbol of the first plurality of OFDM symbols corresponds to a first long training sequence of the first communication protocol that is obtained at least by multiplying a predetermined sequence with a second long training sequence of a second communication protocol;
encoding, at the first communication device, a first plurality of information bits for a second field of the preamble to generate a first plurality of encoded bits;
mapping, at the first communication device, the first plurality of encoded bits to a first plurality of constellation symbols;
generating, at the first communication device, a first plurality of modified constellation symbols, including multiplying the first plurality of constellation symbols by the predetermined sequence;
generating, at the first communication device, a second plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols to include the first plurality of modified constellation symbols;
generating, at the first communication device, the preamble to include the first plurality of OFDM symbols for the first field and the second plurality of OFDM symbols for the second field; and
generating, at the first communication device, the PHY data unit to include at least the preamble, the PHY data unit configured for transmission via the communication channel.

Abstract
A first plurality of OFDM symbols for a first field of a preamble to be included in a data unit that conforms to a first communication protocol are generated, wherein each OFDM symbol of the first plurality of OFDM symbols corresponds to a first long training sequence that is obtained at least by multiplying a predetermined sequence with a second long training sequence defined by a second communication protocol. A first plurality of modified constellation symbols are generated, including multiplying the first plurality of constellation symbols by the predetermined sequence. A second plurality of OFDM symbols are generated to include the first plurality of modified constellation symbols. The preamble is generated to include the first plurality of OFDM symbols for the first field and the second plurality of OFDM symbols for the second field, and the data unit to include at least the preamble.

a network interface device associated with a first communication device, the network interface device having one or more integrated circuit devices configured to; generate a first plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols for a first field of a preamble to be included in a physical layer (PHY) data unit, wherein each OFDM symbol of the first plurality of OFDM symbols corresponds to a first long training sequence of a first communication protocol that is obtained at least by multiplying a predetermined sequence with a second long training sequence of a second communication protocol, encode a first plurality of information bits for a second field of the preamble to generate a first plurality of encoded bits, map the first plurality of encoded bits to a first plurality of constellation symbols, generate a first plurality of modified constellation symbols, including multiplying the first plurality of constellation symbols by the predetermined sequence, generate a second plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols to include the first plurality of modified constellation symbols, generate the preamble to include the first plurality of OFDM symbols for the first field and the second plurality of OFDM symbols for the second field, and generate the PHY data unit to include at least the preamble, the PHY data unit configured for transmission via a communication channel. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22)
