Abstract

Controlling the color temperature of a composite light source including at least one discrete-spectrum light source is disclosed. For example, the color temperature of a composite light source including at least one discrete-spectrum light source may be determined and/or adjusted based on one or more of the ambient color temperature of a space, the actual temperature of the space, the relative brightness of the space, the occupancy of the space, a time clock, a demand response command (e.g., from an electrical utility), the absolute location of the composite light source, the location of the composite light source relative to other light sources, inputs from a camera or other external devices, the operation of appliances or other machines in the vicinity of the composite light source, media content being utilized in the vicinity of the composite light source, and/or other sensor inputs.

Claims

1. A method for automated control of a plurality of lighting loads, each lighting load installed in one of a plurality of spaces, the method comprising:

identifying a first inferred use of a first space of the plurality of spaces;

identifying a second inferred use of a second space of the plurality of spaces; and

generating a command configured to cause a cooler lighting effect for the first space based on the first inferred use;

generating a command configured to cause a warmer lighting effect for the second space based on the second inferred use;

automatically controlling the plurality of lighting loads to maintain the cooler lighting effect in the first space based on the command configured to cause the cooler lighting effect for the first space; and

automatically controlling the plurality of lighting loads to maintain the warmer lighting effect in the second space based on the command configured to cause the warmer lighting effect for the second space.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving sensor information related to the first space and the second space;

wherein at least one of the first inferred use or the second inferred use is identified based on the sensor information.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the sensor information comprises information from one or more sensors, wherein the information from the one or more sensors is associated with a color temperature of daylight, the method further comprising:

determining, based on the sensor information, the color temperature of the daylight;

controlling the plurality of lighting loads to produce a first gradient of color temperatures across the plurality of lighting loads from a source of the daylight to consistently maintain the cooler lighting effect in the first space based on the identified first inferred use; and

controlling the plurality of lighting loads to produce a second gradient of color temperatures across the plurality of lighting loads from the source of the daylight to consistently maintain the warmer lighting effect in the second space based on the identified second inferred use.

The method of claim 3, wherein the plurality of lighting loads comprise a first lighting load, a second lighting load, and a third lighting load, wherein the first lighting load is closer to the source of the daylight than the second lighting load, and the second lighting load is closer to the source of the daylight than the third lighting load, the method comprising:

controlling the first lighting load towards a same color temperature value as the color temperature of daylight, the second lighting load at a second color temperature that is higher than the first color temperature, and the third lighting load at a third color temperature value that is higher than the second color temperature value to produce the first gradient.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the sensor information comprises information related to a number of occupants in the first space.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the sensor information comprises information from one or more sensors, wherein the one or more sensors comprise at least one of an occupancy sensor, a daylight sensor, a color temperature sensor, a temperature sensor, a shadow sensor, or a camera.

The method of claim 1, wherein each lighting load of the plurality of lighting loads comprises a first discrete-spectrum light source and a second discrete-spectrum light source, wherein the first and second discrete-spectrum light sources emit light at different color temperatures, and wherein the lighting load adjusts a composite color temperature of the emitted light by varying a first intensity level of the first discrete-spectrum light source and varying a second intensity level of the second discrete-spectrum light source.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the composite color temperature of the emitted light is varied by adjusting the first intensity level and the second intensity level while maintaining a specified ratio between the first intensity level and the second intensity level.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the first discrete-spectrum light source emits the light with a warmer color temperature, and the second discrete-spectrum light source emits the light with a cooler color temperature.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the first inferred use of the first space is associated with a cognitive task, and the second inferred use of the second space is associated with a non-cognitive task.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the non-cognitive task is associated with a creative or an entertainment setting.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the first space and the second space are in a room that comprises the plurality of lighting loads, the method further comprising:

controlling the plurality of the lighting loads to operate the plurality of lighting loads at respective color temperatures to produce a gradient of color temperatures from cooler color temperatures in the first space to warmer color temperatures in the second space.

13. A method for automated control of a plurality of lighting loads, each lighting load installed in one of a plurality of spaces, the method comprising:

identifying a first inferred use of a space of the plurality of spaces;

generating a command configured to cause a first lighting effect for the space based on the first inferred use;

automatically controlling the plurality of lighting loads to maintain the first lighting effect in the space based on the command configured to cause the first lighting effect for the space;

detecting a change of the first inferred use to a second inferred use, wherein the second inferred use is related to a second lighting effect;

generating a command configured to cause the second lighting effect for the space based on the change of the first inferred use to the second inferred use; and

automatically controlling the plurality of lighting loads to maintain the second lighting effect in the space based on the command configured to cause the second lighting effect for the space.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the first lighting effect is cooler than the second lighting effect.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the first lighting effect is warmer than the second lighting effect.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the second inferred use is associated with a media use.

17. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

identifying a window treatment device in the space, wherein the window treatment device partially or fully blocks daylight that enters the space through the window treatment device;

controlling the window treatment device to partially block the daylight that enters the space through the window treatment device based on the command configured to cause the first lighting effect for the space based on the first inferred use; and

controlling the window treatment device to cause the window treatment device to fully block the daylight that enters the space through the window treatment device based on the command configured to cause the second lighting effect for the space based on the second inferred use.

A system controller for controlling a plurality of lighting loads, each lighting load installed in one of a plurality of spaces, wherein a lighting load of the plurality of lighting loads includes a first discrete-spectrum light source adapted to emit light corresponding to a first color temperature and a second discrete-spectrum light source adapted to emit light corresponding to a second color temperature that is substantially different than the first color temperature, the lighting load configured to emit a composite light output characterized by a composite color temperature, the system controller comprising:

a first load regulation circuit configured to adjust an intensity of the first discrete-spectrum light source;

a second load regulation circuit configured to adjust an intensity of the second discrete-spectrum light source; and

a control circuit configured to;

identify a first inferred use of a first space of the plurality of spaces;

identify a second inferred use of a second space of the plurality of spaces;

generate a command configured to cause a cooler lighting effect for the first space based on the first inferred use;

generate a command configured to cause a warmer lighting effect for the second space based on the second inferred use; and

automatically control the plurality of lighting loads to maintain the cooler lighting effect in the first space by sending the command configured to cause the cooler lighting effect for the first space to the first load regulation circuit and the second load regulation circuit; and

automatically control the plurality of lighting loads to maintain the warmer lighting effect in the second space by sending the command configured to cause the warmer lighting effect for the second space to the first load regulation circuit and the second load regulation circuit.

The system controller of claim 18, wherein the control circuit is further configured to receive sensor information related to at least one of the first space or the second space, and wherein at least one of the first inferred use or the second inferred use is identified based on the sensor information.

20. The system controller of claim 19, wherein the sensor information comprises information from one or more sensors, wherein the information from the one or more sensors is associated with a color temperature of daylight, and wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

determine, based on the sensor information, the color temperature of the daylight;

control the plurality of lighting loads to produce a first gradient of color temperatures across the plurality of lighting loads from a source of the daylight to consistently maintain the cooler lighting effect in the first space based on the identified first inferred use; and

control the plurality of lighting loads to produce a second gradient of color temperatures across the plurality of lighting loads from the source of the daylight to consistently maintain the warmer lighting effect in the second space based on the identified second inferred use.

The system controller of claim 20, wherein the plurality of lighting loads comprise a first lighting load, a second lighting load, and a third lighting load, wherein the first lighting load is closer to the source of the daylight than the second lighting load, and the second lighting load is closer to the source of the daylight than the third lighting load, and wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

control the first lighting load towards a same color temperature value as the color temperature of daylight, the second lighting load at a second color temperature that is higher than the first color temperature, and the third lighting load at a third color temperature value that is higher than the second color temperature value to produce the first gradient.

22. The system controller of claim 19, wherein the sensor information comprises information related to a number of occupants in the first space.

23. The system controller of claim 19, wherein the sensor information comprises information from one or more sensors, wherein the one or more sensors comprise at least one of an occupancy sensor, a daylight sensor, a color temperature sensor, a temperature sensor, a shadow sensor, or a camera.

The system controller of claim 18, wherein the first discrete-spectrum light source comprises a first light emitting diode (LED) light source, wherein the first LED light source comprises an LED driver and an LED light engine, wherein the LED driver is configured to adjust an intensity level of the LED light source using phase control signals.

25. The system controller of claim 24, wherein the second discrete-spectrum light source comprises a compact fluorescent lamp, and wherein the compact fluorescent lamp is controlled by an electronic ballast.

26. The system controller of claim 18, wherein the first space and the second space are in a room that comprises the plurality of lighting loads and the control circuit is configured to:

control the plurality of the lighting loads to operate the plurality of lighting loads at respective color temperatures to produce a gradient of color temperatures from cooler color temperatures in the first space to warmer color temperatures in the second space.

The system controller of claim 18, wherein the composite color temperature of the emitted composite light output is varied by adjusting the intensity of the first discrete-spectrum light source and the intensity of the second discrete-spectrum light source while maintaining a specified ratio between the intensity of the first discrete-spectrum light source and the intensity of the second discrete-spectrum light source.

28. The system controller of claim 18, wherein the first discrete-spectrum light source emits the light with a warmer color temperature, and the second discrete-spectrum light source emits the light with a cooler color temperature.

A system controller for controlling a plurality of lighting loads, each lighting load installed in one of a plurality of spaces, wherein a lighting load of the plurality of lighting loads includes a first discrete-spectrum light source adapted to emit light corresponding to a first color temperature and a second discrete-spectrum light source adapted to emit light corresponding to a second color temperature that is substantially different than the first color temperature, the lighting load configured to emit a composite light output characterized by a composite color temperature, the system controller comprising:

a first load regulation circuit configured to adjust an intensity of the first discrete-spectrum light source;

a second load regulation circuit configured to adjust an intensity of the second discrete-spectrum light source; and

a control circuit configured to;

identify a first inferred use of a space of the plurality of spaces;

generate a command configured to cause a first lighting effect for the space based on the first inferred use;

automatically control the plurality of lighting loads to maintain the first lighting effect in the space by sending the command configured to cause the first lighting effect for the space to the first load regulation circuit and the second load regulation circuit;

detect a change of the first inferred use to a second inferred use, wherein the second inferred use is related to a second lighting effect;

generate a command configured to cause the second lighting effect for the space based on the change of the first inferred use to the second inferred use; and

automatically control the plurality of lighting loads to maintain the second lighting effect in the space by sending the command configured to cause the second lighting effect for the space to the first load regulation circuit and the second load regulation circuit.

30. The system controller of claim 29, wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

identify a window treatment device in the space, wherein the window treatment device partially or fully blocks daylight that enters the space through the window treatment device;

control the window treatment device to partially block the daylight that enters the space through the window treatment device based on the command configured to cause the first lighting effect for the space; and

control the window treatment device to cause the window treatment device to fully block the daylight that enters the space through the window treatment device based on the command configured to cause the second lighting effect for the space.
