Powered surgical instrument
First Claim
1. A surgical instrument system, comprisinga housing assembly;
- an endoscopic portion selectively connectable to the housing assembly;
a shaft portion having a distal end and a proximal end, the proximal end being selectively connectable to the endoscopic portion, the shaft portion being a unique type of shaft portion;
a first end effector selectively connectable to the distal end of the shaft portion, the first end effector configured to perform a first surgical function, the first end effector being a unique type of first end effector;
a first electronic component disposed in electrical communication with the endoscopic portion;
a second electronic component disposed on the shaft portion and in electrical communication with the first electronic component, the second electrical component being configured to communicate with the first electronic component to determine the type of shaft portion that is engaged with the endoscopic portion; and
a third electronic component disposed on the first end effector, the third electrical component being configured to communicate with the second electronic component to determine the type of first end effector that is engaged with the shaft portion.

Abstract
A surgical instrument including a handle assembly, a first endoscopic portion, a motor, and a first end effector is disclosed. The first endoscopic portion is selectively connectable to a distal portion of the handle assembly and defines a longitudinal axis. The first endoscopic portion includes a housing adjacent its proximal portion and includes an actuation member. The motor is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the housing of the first endoscopic portion and is operatively connected to the actuation member for moving the actuation member substantially along the longitudinal axis. The first end effector is selectively connectable to a distal portion of the first endoscopic portion and is configured to perform a first stapling function.
