Multifunction wireless device
First Claim
1. A wireless communication device for use in a prison facility, the wireless communication device comprising one or more circuits configured to:
- perform an initial authentication of an inmate user of the wireless communication device;
permit bidirectional wireless communication with the wireless communication device that is initiated by the inmate user after the initial authentication of the inmate user;
limit the bidirectional wireless communication to a wireless network of the prison facility;
perform, at least in part, a continued authentication of the inmate user using authentication information provided by the inmate user, wherein the authentication information from the inmate user for the continued authentication is provided continuously or at a given authentication interval;
in response to failing the continued authentication of the inmate user, perform one of;
cause the wireless communication device to enter a lock-down mode, terminate the bidirectional wireless communication, or suspend the bidirectional wireless communication; and
receive sensed environment information from at least one sensor in the wireless communication device for re-transmission via the wireless network, the one or more circuits configured to provide the received sensed environment information to a monitoring station associated with the prison facility to allow the wireless communication device to be located by administration personnel of the prison facility.

Abstract
A communication device and system are disclosed for providing communication and data services to residents of a controlled facility. The device can be restricted to communicating only using an interact protocol so as to restrict the device communication to an internal intranet. Wireless access points may be disposed throughout the environment to route calls and data between the device and a central processing center. By converting a protocol of the communications received from the device to a protocol used by the central processing center, minimal modifications to the central processing center are needed to support a wireless communication infrastructure. Many restrictions and safeguards may be implemented within the phone and system in order to prevent improper use.

11. A method of wireless communication by a wireless communication device in a prison facility, the method comprising:
-
performing an initial authentication of an inmate user of the wireless communication device; permitting bidirectional wireless communication with the wireless communication device that is initiated by the inmate user after the initial authentication of the inmate user; limiting the bidirectional wireless communication initiated by the inmate user to a wireless network of the prison facility; performing, at least in part, a continued authentication of the inmate user using authentication information provided by the inmate user, wherein the authentication information from the inmate user for the continued authentication is provided continuously or at a given authentication interval; in response to failing the continued authentication of the inmate user, performing one of;
causing the wireless communication device to enter a lock-down mode terminating the bidirectional wireless communication, or suspending the bidirectional wireless communication;receiving sensed environment information from at least one sensor in the wireless communication device for re-transmission via the wireless network; and providing the received sensed environment information to a monitoring station associated with the prison facility to allow the wireless communication device to be located by administration personnel of the prison facility. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30)
