Abstract

A stent delivery system, a core assembly, and methods of operating the same are provided. The delivery system can comprise a catheter and the core assembly. The core assembly can comprise a constraining member, protruding member, a core member, and a stent extending along the core member. The tubular constraining member can be spaced apart from the core member and define a capture area. The protruding member can be disposed along the core member at least partially distal of the capture area. The stent can have a first portion disposed within the capture area and a second portion, distal to the first portion, extending across or over an outer surface of the protruding member so that the protruding member and the constraining member cooperate to inhibit expansion of the first portion of the stent.

Claims

1. A stent delivery system, comprising:

a catheter having a lumen and a distal end; and

a core assembly disposed within the catheter lumen, the core assembly comprising (i) an elongate member comprising a distal section, (ii) a stent having a distal portion and being carried along the elongate member, and (iii) a distal cover coupled to the member distal section and extending proximally, the core assembly having a pre-deployment state in which the core assembly is positioned within the lumen such that the elongate member distal section is positioned axially adjacent the catheter distal end with at least a portion of the distal cover extending in a space within the lumen radially between the elongate member distal section and the catheter distal end, the core assembly further having a deployment state in which the distal cover is positioned out of the space and extends distally, wherein the distal cover comprises a second end coupled to the elongate member distal section, and wherein in the distal oriented position, the first end is positioned distally relative to the second end.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein in the deployment state, the stent distal portion is expanded from the pre-deployment state.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein in the deployment state, a free first end of the distal cover is everted to a distally oriented position from a proximally oriented position of the pre-deployment state.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the second end of the distal cover is rotatably coupled with respect to the elongate member.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the stent is configured to rotate about the elongate member at least in part due to the rotatable coupling of the distal cover.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the distal cover at least partially surrounds less than an entire length of the stent.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the distal cover comprises one or more elongate strips of material.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the elongate member comprises a protruding member capable of rotating about a longitudinal axis of the elongate member, the stent being rotatable with respect to the elongate member at least in part due to the rotatability of the protruding member.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the protruding member comprises an outer surface configured to grip the stent between a wall of the catheter and the protruding member.

10. A stent delivery system, comprising:

a catheter having a lumen and a distal end; and

a core assembly disposed within the catheter, the core assembly comprising (i) a distal section, (ii) a distal cover extending from the distal section, and (iii) a stent having a distal portion and being carried by the core assembly;

wherein the core assembly has a pre-deployment state in which the core assembly is positioned within the catheter lumen such that the distal cover extends proximally from the distal section,

wherein the core assembly has a deployment state in which the distal cover is everted to extend distally from the distal section through an annular space between the distal section and the catheter, and

wherein the distal cover comprises first and second ends, the first end being positioned distally relative to the second end when the distal cover is everted, the distal cover being coupled to the core assembly at the second end.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein in the deployment state, the distal cover extends distally through the annular space to provide a clearance between the catheter and an intermediate portion of the core assembly proximal to the distal cover.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the second end of the distal cover is rotatably coupled with respect to the elongate member.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the elongate member comprises a protruding member capable of rotating about a longitudinal axis of the elongate member, the stent being rotatable with respect to the elongate member at least in part due to the rotatability of the protruding member.

14. A system of operating a stent delivery system within a vessel of a patient, comprising:

a catheter having a lumen and a distal end; and

a core assembly disposed within the catheter lumen, the core assembly having (i) an elongate member comprising a distal section, (ii) a self-expanding stent having a distal portion and being carried by the elongate member, and (iii) a distal cover having first and second ends, the first end coupled to the member distal section;

wherein in a pre-deployment configuration, the second end extends proximally from the member distal section to be radially interposed between the catheter and the stent distal portion without exerting a substantial radial constraining force on the stent; and

wherein in a deployment configuration, the second end of the distal cover is positioned distally beyond the first end.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein in the deployment state, a free first end of the distal cover is everted to a distally oriented position from a proximally oriented position of the pre-deployment state.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the second end of the distal cover is rotatably coupled with respect to the elongate member.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the elongate member comprises a protruding member capable of rotating about a longitudinal axis of the elongate member, the stent being rotatable with respect to the elongate member at least in part due to the rotatability of the protruding member.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the protruding member comprises an outer surface configured to grip the stent between a wall of the catheter and the protruding member.
