Abstract

Navigating on a display includes tracking motion of an input tool on a display, comparing a motion of the input tool to a threshold, and changing a position of the visible portion of a page of information on the display if the input tool motion exceeds the threshold. The position of the visible portion of the page of information on the display is constrained if the motion does not exceed the threshold.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

providing a viewing window on a display, the viewing window including a visible portion of information;

detecting a motion associated with an input tool;

changing the visible portion of information, from a first portion of information to a second portion of information, based on the detected motion associated with the input tool;

determining, using a processor, whether a magnitude of the detected motion exceeds a threshold value; and

changing, after the detected motion associated with the input tool, the visible portion of information to the first portion of information when the detected motion does not exceed the threshold value.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, further comprising maintaining the visible portion of information at the second portion of information when it is determined that the detected motion exceeds the threshold value.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, further comprising changing, after the detected motion associated with the input tool, the visible portion of information from the second portion of information to a third portion of information if the detected motion exceeds the threshold value.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3, wherein:

the first portion of information comprises at least a portion of a first piece of content, and

the second portion of information comprises at least a portion of the first piece of content and at least a portion of a second piece of content.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4, wherein the first piece of content is a first piece of a webpage, and wherein the second piece of content is a second piece of the webpage.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5, wherein the first piece of the webpage comprises a first column and wherein the second piece of the webpage comprises a second column.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 4, wherein the visible portion of the second portion of information comprises a split between the first piece of content and the second piece of content.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 4, wherein the first piece of content comprises text.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 4, wherein the first piece of content comprises an image.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein changing, after the detected motion associated with the input tool, the visible portion of information to the first portion of information comprises changing the visible portion of information to the first portion after the input tool is lifted from the display.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the threshold comprises a horizontal movement threshold.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein changing the visible portion of information from the first portion of information to the second portion of information comprises changing the visible portion of information from the first portion of information to the second portion of information during the detected motion.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the input tool comprises a human finger.

14. A mobile device comprising:

a display;

at least one processor; and

at least one computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the mobile device to;

display a visible portion of information on the display;

detect a motion associated with an input tool;

change the visible portion of information, from a first portion of information to a second portion of information, based on the detected motion associated with the input tool;

determine, using a processor, whether a magnitude of the detected motion exceeds a threshold value; and

change, after the detected motion associated with the input tool, the visible portion of information to the first portion of information when the detected motion does not exceed the threshold value.

15. The mobile device of claim 14, further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the mobile device to maintain the visible portion of information at the second portion of information when it is determined that the detected motion exceeds the threshold value.

The mobile device of claim 14, further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the mobile device to change, after the detected motion associated with the input tool, the visible portion of information from the second portion of information to a third portion of information if the detected motion exceeds the threshold value.

17. The mobile device of claim 16, wherein:

the first portion of information comprises at least a portion of a first piece of content, and

the second portion of information comprises at least a portion of the first piece of content and at least a portion of a second piece of content.

18. The mobile device of claim 17, wherein the first piece of content is a first piece of a webpage, and wherein the second piece of content is a second piece of the webpage.

19. The mobile device of claim 18, wherein the first piece of the webpage comprises a first column and wherein the second piece of the webpage comprises a second column.

20. The mobile device of claim 17, wherein the visible portion of the second portion of information comprises a split between the first piece of content and the second piece of content.

21. The mobile device of claim 14, wherein changing, after the detected motion associated with the input tool, the visible portion of information to the first portion of information comprises changing the visible portion of information to the first portion after the input tool is lifted from the display.

22. The mobile device of claim 14, wherein changing the visible portion of information from the first portion of information to the second portion of information comprises changing the visible portion of information from the first portion of information to the second portion of information during the detected motion.
