Integrated radiation therapy systems and methods for treating a target in a patient
First Claim
1. A method for assessing a treatment fraction in radiation therapy, the method comprising;
- irradiating a patient with a radiation beam according to desired radiation dosage levels associated with a predetermined treatment plan;
while irradiating the patient, producing target data indicative of at least one of size and shape of a target within the patient without acquiring images of the target within the patient, wherein producing the target data includes—
periodically locating one or more of a plurality of markers positioned within the patient relative to an external reference frame using a localization modality, anddetermining the relative distances between the periodically located markers within the patient;
using the target data to produce an assessment of radiation dosage levels to which the patient was exposed while irradiated; and
producing an adapted treatment plan based on differences between the desired radiation dosage levels and the assessment of radiation dosage levels.

Abstract
An integrated radiation therapy process comprises acquiring first objective target data related to a parameter of a target within a patient by periodically locating a marker positioned within the patient using a localization modality. This method continues with obtaining second objective target data related to the parameter of the target by periodically locating the marker. The first objective target data can be acquired in a first area that is apart from a second area which contains a radiation delivery device for producing an ionizing radiation beam for treating the patient. The localization modality can be the same in both the first and second areas. In other embodiments, the first objective target data can be acquired using a first localization modality that uses a first energy type to identify the marker and the second objective target data can be obtained using a second localization modality that uses a second energy type to identify the marker that is different than the first energy type.

9. A method of assessing performance of a treatment fraction in radiation therapy, comprising:
-
irradiating a target within a patient with a radiation beam of a radiation delivery device according to desired radiation dosage levels associated with a predetermined treatment plan; while irradiating the target and without acquiring computerized tomography images of the target within the patient periodically locating one or more of a plurality of markers positioned within the patient proximate the target and relative to a reference frame using a localization system that monitors the markers and outputs objective target data over a substantially continuous period of time, wherein the target data includes relative distances between the periodically located markers within the patient and indicates at least one of size and shape of the target within the patient, and recording hardware data of the radiation delivery device while irradiating the patient; correlating the target data with the hardware data to produce an assessment of radiation dosage levels to which the patient was exposed while irradiated; and producing an adapted treatment plan based on differences between the desired radiation dosage levels and the assessment of radiation dosage levels.
