1. A method, comprising:

  • sending, by a device, collision avoidance safety messages to prevent potential collisions between vehicles and the device;

    determining, by the device, whether a current or predicted future location of the device intersects an action zone, wherein an action zone corresponds to a geographic area in which a potential collision may occur between a vehicle and the device;

    adjusting, by the device, a broadcast rate for the collision avoidance safety messages based on whether the device determines that the current or predicted future location of the device intersects an action zone, wherein adjusting the broadcast rate for the collision avoidance safety messages comprises;

    determining, by the device, a broadcast sleep period of time during which the device does not send collision avoidance safety messages based on whether the device determines that the current or predicted future location of the device intersects an action zone; and

    determining, by the device, an off period of time for a radio transceiver of the device based on the broadcast sleep period and an amount of time needed for the transceiver to power back on, wherein the device uses the radio transceiver to send the collision avoidance safety messages.
