1. A method to determine a state of charge of a battery and charge the battery, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the method comprising:
- selecting a first relationship of an open circuit voltage to an amount of charge in the battery based on or using a state of health of the battery during a first charge cycle;
measuring a voltage at the terminals of the battery to generate a first measured voltage;
calculating an open circuit voltage of the battery to generate a calculated open circuit voltage using the first measured voltage;
determining a first state of charge of the battery based on or using (i) the calculated open circuit voltage and (ii) the first relationship of the open circuit voltage to the amount of charge in the battery; and
using the determined state of charge to adjust a charge signal and apply the adjusted charge signal to charge the battery.

Abstract
The present inventions, in one aspect, are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to applying a current pulse to the terminals of the battery during a charge, measuring a voltage at the terminals of the battery, selecting a relationship of an open circuit voltage to an amount of charge in the battery using data which is representative of a state of health of the battery, calculating an open circuit voltage of the battery using the voltage measured at the terminals of the battery, a current applied to or removed from the battery and an impedance of the battery, and determining a state of charge of the battery using (i) the calculated open circuit voltage and (ii) the relationship of the open circuit voltage to the amount of charge.

current generation circuitry, coupled to the battery, to generate a current signal and apply the current signal to the battery; measurement circuitry, coupled to the battery, to measure a terminal voltage of the battery in response to the current signal; and control circuitry, coupled to the measurement circuitry, wherein the control circuitry is configured to; select a relationship of an open circuit voltage to an amount of charge in the battery based on or using a state of health of the battery; determine a state of charge of the battery using (i) an open circuit voltage of the battery and (ii) the selected relationship of the open circuit voltage of the battery to the amount of charge in the battery; and adjust the charge signal based upon the determined state of charge and apply the adjusted charge signal to charge the battery. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14)

15. A method to calculate and output a state of charge of a battery, wherein the battery includes at least two terminals, the method comprising:

applying a current signal to the battery using current generation circuitry; terminating the application of the current signal to the battery; measuring a voltage at the terminals of the battery after terminating the application of the current signal to the battery using measurement circuitry; selecting a relationship of an open circuit voltage to an amount of charge in the battery based on or using a state of health of the battery; determining an open circuit voltage of the battery using the voltage measured at the terminals of the battery, an amount of current applied to or removed from the battery and an impedance of the battery; determining a first state of charge of the battery using control circuitry based on or using (i) the calculated open circuit voltage and (ii) the selected relationship of the open circuit voltage to the amount of charge in the battery; and using or outputting data which is representative of the first state of charge of the battery. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20)

current generation circuitry, coupled to the battery, to generate a current signal and apply the current signal to the battery; measurement circuitry, coupled to the battery, to measure a terminal voltage of the battery in response to the current signal; control circuitry, coupled to the measurement circuitry, wherein the control circuitry is configured to; select a relationship of an open circuit voltage to an amount of charge in the battery based on or using a state of health of the battery; and determine a state of charge of the battery using (i) an open circuit voltage of the battery and (ii) the selected relationship of the open circuit voltage of the battery to the amount of charge in the battery; and a user interface comprising a display that is configured to visually present the determined state of charge, and/or a speaker that is configured to audibly present the determined state of charge.
