Abstract

An apparatus includes first and second movable members for coupling force therebetween and a magnetic flux coupling element. Each of the first and second movable members has an array of magnetic poles. The first and second movable members are arranged concentrically for relative rotation therebetween. The magnetic flux coupling element is arranged between the first and second movable members, thereby providing a flux density region of relatively high magnetic flux density between a pole of the first movable member and a pole of the second movable member. The magnetic flux coupling element is split along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members into a plurality of flux coupling parts.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

first and second movable members for coupling force therebetween, each of the first and second movable members having an array of magnetic poles, wherein the first and second movable members are arranged concentrically for relative rotation therebetween, wherein the array of magnetic poles of at least one of the first and second movable members is split along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members into a plurality of split arrays, wherein the plurality of split arrays are offset in a direction of relative rotation with respect to each other; and

a magnetic flux coupling element being arranged between the first and second movable members, thereby providing a flux density region between a pole of the first movable member and a pole of the second movable member, wherein the magnetic flux coupling element is split along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members into a plurality of flux coupling parts.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the first and second members are arranged so that magnetic flux can pass between the first and second arrays via an air gap, and wherein the magnetic flux coupling element is arranged in the air gap.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the magnetic flux coupling element is incorporated in a membrane separating the first and second members.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 in which the magnetic flux coupling element is substantially the same thickness as the membrane or thicker than the membrane.

5. The apparatus of claim 3 in which one of the first and second members is housed in a vacuum chamber, the membrane comprising a wall of the vacuum chamber such that the coupling element is incorporated in the vacuum chamber wall.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the array of magnetic poles of the first and second members each comprises an alternating array of magnetic poles.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the poles of each array are substantially equally spaced with respect to one another.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 in which one of the plurality of flux coupling parts is arranged with a different alignment in the direction of relative rotation relative to one of the poles of the first and second members than another of the flux coupling parts.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the magnetic flux coupling element forms a symmetrical pattern along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the magnetic flux coupling element forms a chevron or a sinusoidal pattern along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the coupling element comprises material having a relative magnetic permeability greater than about 400.

The apparatus of claim 1 in which the array of magnetic poles of both of the first and second movable members is split along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members into a plurality of split arrays, wherein the plurality of split arrays are offset in a direction of relative rotation with respect to each other.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 in which the poles of the first plurality of split arrays have substantially the same spacing as those of the second plurality of split arrays.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 in which poles of the first plurality of split arrays have a greater or lesser spacing than the spacing of poles in the second plurality of split arrays.

15. A method of making a coupler for magnetically coupling force between first and second movable members arranged for relative rotation therebetween, the method comprising:

arranging an array of alternating magnetic poles on each of the first and second movable members, wherein the array of magnetic poles of at least one of the first and second movable members is split along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members into a plurality of split arrays, wherein the plurality of split arrays are offset in a direction of relative rotation with respect to each other;

arranging a magnetic flux coupling element between the first and second movable members, thereby providing a magnetic flux density region between a pole of the first movable member and a pole of the second movable member for magnetically coupling force between the first and second movable members, wherein the magnetic flux element is split along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members into a plurality of flux coupling parts.

16. An apparatus, comprising:

first and second movable members for coupling force therebetween, each of the first and second movable members having an array of magnetic poles, wherein the first and second movable members are arranged for relative rotation therebetween, wherein the array of magnetic poles of at least one of the first and second movable members is split along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members into a plurality of split arrays, wherein the plurality of split arrays are offset in a direction of relative rotation with respect to each other; and

a magnetic flux coupling element being arranged between the first and second movable members, thereby providing a flux density region between a pole of the first movable member and a pole of the second movable member, wherein the magnetic flux coupling element is split along an axis orthogonal to a direction of motion of the first and second movable members into a plurality of flux coupling parts.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 in which the array of the first movable member is arranged inside the array of the second movable member.
