Abstract

A light effect material is used to create a viewing effect visible to a viewer on the opposite side of the light effect material than one or more LEDs which emit light which is dispersed by dispersive elements on the outer surface of the light effect material. A transparent space is used to space the LEDs apart from the dispersive elements of the light effect material and light emitting dies of the LEDs are substantially parallel to the light effect material.

Claims

1. An article of manufacture, comprising:

a garment; and

a lighting unit affixed to the garment, wherein said lighting unit comprises;

a light effect material having an inner surface and an outer surface with a plurality of dispersive elements;

a transparent space proximate the inner surface;

one or more light emitting diodes (“

LEDs”

), each of the one or more LEDs having a light emitting die that emits light when it is energized;

wherein the transparent space maintains the light effect material at a preselected distance from the one or more LEDs;

wherein the plurality of dispersive elements have a polyhedric shape with an inner base and a plurality of walls connected to the inner base which extend to a convergent area, said inner base being more proximate the inner surface than the convergent outer area, said inner base having a larger area than the convergent area; and

wherein the one or more LEDs, the transparent space and the light effect material are configured within the lighting unit so that light emitted from the one or more LEDs travels through the transparent space before it is refracted by the plurality of dispersive elements when viewed from a point outside of the outer surface looking at the lighting unit affixed to the garment, said point being more proximate to the outer surface than to the inner surface.

2. The article of manufacture of claim 1, wherein the polyhedric shape is a pyramid.

3. The article of manufacture of claim 2, wherein the outer area is a convergence point.

4. The article of manufacture of claim 2, wherein the outer area is a planar area.

5. An article of manufacture, comprising:

a garment; and

a lighting unit affixed to the garment, wherein said lighting unit comprises;

a light effect material having an inner surface and an outer surface with a plurality of dispersive elements;

a transparent space proximate the inner surface; and

one or more light emitting diodes (“

LEDs”

), each of the one or more LEDs having a light emitting die that emits light when it is energized;

wherein the transparent space maintains the light effect material at a preselected distance from the one or more LEDs and each light emitting die is substantially parallel to the light effect material so that light emitted from each light emitting die is dispersed by the plurality of dispersive elements so as to create a visual effect to a viewer of the garment from a preselected distance in which the visual effect covers a larger viewing area than would be seen by the viewer with the light effect material removed; and

wherein the one or more LEDs, the transparent space and the light effect material are configured within the lighting unit so that light emitted from the one or more LEDs travels through the transparent space before it is refracted by the plurality of dispersive elements when viewed from a point outside of the outer surface looking at the lighting unit affixed to the garment, said point being more proximate to the outer surface than to the inner surface.

6. An apparatus, comprising:

an outer transparent layer having an outer surface and an inner surface;

a transparent spacing layer located closer to the inner surface than to the outer surface;

a light effect material, said light effect material spaced between the inner surface of the outer transparent layer and the transparent spacing layer;

a plurality of light emitting diodes (“

LEDs”

), each of the plurality of LEDs having a light emitting die that emits light when it is energized;

a power source;

a control device powered by the power source for controlling electric current provided to the LED;

at least one electrical connector electrically connecting the control device to the plurality of LEDs; and

a switch for providing a signal to the control device for turning on an electrical circuit which includes the plurality of LEDs, the at least one electrical connector, the control device and the power source to cause the plurality of LEDs to emit light;

wherein the transparent spacing layer maintains the light effect material at a preselected distance from the plurality of LEDs and the light emitting die of each of the plurality of LEDs is substantially parallel to the light effect material so that light emitted from each light emitting die is dispersed by the light effect material so as to create a light material viewing effect;

wherein the light material viewing effect is created for a viewer viewing light emitted from each light emitting die through a first viewing path that begins with each light emitting die, then goes through the transparent spacing layer, then goes through the light effect material, then goes through the inner surface, then goes through the outer surface, then goes to the viewer;

wherein a non-light material viewing effect is created for the viewer viewing light emitted from each light emitting die through a second viewing path in which the light effect material has been removed and the second viewing path begins with each light emitting die, then goes through the transparent spacing layer, then goes through the inner surface, then goes through the outer surface, then goes to the viewer; and

wherein the viewer perceives the light material viewing effect to extend over a wider area than the non-light material viewing effect when the first viewing path and the second viewing path have an identical preselected distance.

The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the light effect material is comprised of a material with a plurality of dispersive elements and each of the plurality of dispersive elements is sufficiently small so that the light material viewing effect created by each light emitting die appears to be that of a plurality of points of light.

The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the light effect material has a second outer surface and a second inner surface, the second inner surface being adjacent to the transparent spacing layer, the second outer surface being sealed to the first inner surface, the plurality of dispersive elements being located on the second outer surface.

The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the plurality of dispersive elements have a pyramidal shape with a base and an upper point, the base being located more distant to the inner surface than the upper point, the base having a length which is roughly the same or within several orders of size magnitude as that of the light emitting die.

The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the light effect material is comprised of a first layer of light effect material and a second layer of light effect material and the light material viewing effect is created by a combination of a first viewing effect created by the first layer of light effect material and a second viewing effect created by the second layer of light effect material.

11. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the apparatus is affixed to a garment as an applique, the power source and the switch are protected from water by a waterproof material, and the apparatus will still function after the garment has been soaked in water.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the plurality of LEDs, the power source, the control device and the switch are held between the garment and the outer transparent layer.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the plurality of LEDs are affixed to the transparent spacing layer by at least one adhesive material.

The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the plurality of LEDs include a first LED which emits light of a first color and a second LED which emits light of a second color, and the first and the second LEDs are arranged so that the light material viewing effect is created by a combination of a first viewing effect created by the first LED and a second viewing effect created by the second LED and at least a portion of a first area of the first viewing effect falls within a second area of the second viewing effect.
