1. A method for treating an airway disorder comprising:

  • providing an implant configured for placement in a patient'"'"'s tongue, wherein the implant has first and second end portions that attach to tissue, and an elastomeric medial portion between the first and second ends, wherein the elastomeric medial portion has a tensioned state and is configured to apply a pressure of less than 20 kPa;

    providing a cannula configured with a lumen for receiving the implant therethrough; and

    placing the implant in the tensioned state submandibularly in the patient'"'"'s tongue through the cannula lumen such that the first end portion is located in an anterior portion of the tongue and the second end portion is located in a posterior portion of the tongue,wherein the second end portion located in the posterior portion of the tongue has a planar shape with a cross-section that is substantially larger than a planar cross-section of the first end located in the anterior portion of the tongue such that the second end portion distributes forces applied by the implant over a broad area of the tongue and prevents point loads on tissue which could cause unwanted tissue dissection, tissue damage or unwanted tissue remodeling in the posterior portion of the tongue.
