1. An apparatus comprising:

  • a set of electrodes adapted for implantation at a first portion of gastrointestinal tract, wherein said set of electrodes is configured for both detecting a natural circumferential contraction at the first portion of gastrointestinal tract and for providing electrical stimulation to induce a circumferential contraction to the first portion of gastrointestinal tract; and

    a controller configured to receive a natural circumferential contraction signal from said set of electrodes, and is further configured to output an electrical signal to the same said set of electrodes to induce a circumferential contraction of the gastrointestinal tract only upon receiving the natural circumferential contraction signal from said set of electrodes.
