Abstract

An In-Building Communications system is disclosed which permits communication in tunnels, underground parking garages, tall buildings such as skyscrapers, buildings having thick walls of concrete or metal, and/or any building which has communication dead zones due to electromagnetic shielding. The invention includes a portable bi-directional amplifier (BDA) system, an outdoor antenna system attached to the building or independently mountable, an indoor antenna system attached to the building or independently mountable inside the building, and a standardized, In-Building Communications (IBC) interface box affixed preferably to the exterior of the building. The interface box communicates with antenna systems attached to the building. The fire department or other emergency response personnel carry portable outdoor and indoor antenna systems and a portable, lithium-ion battery powered, bi-directional amplifier (BDA) system which may be connected to the building during an event such as a fire, earthquake, or an act of terrorism or whenever radio coverage enhancement is required. The portable BDA system is simply connected to the standardized, IBC interface box and powered thus restoring communications within.

Claims

1. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, comprising the steps of:

setting up a tripod stand;

directing a directional outdoor antenna along a desired azimuth angle and elevation angle to engage a particular donor repeater site;

raising a stand mast of said tripod stand to a desired height;

determining the location of said particular donor repeater site from a regional grid map;

positioning a portable bi-directional amplifier near said directional outdoor antenna;

removing a first coaxial cable from a cable organizer;

connecting one end of said first coaxial cable to said directional outdoor antenna and connecting the other end of said first coaxial cable to an outdoor antenna connector of said bi-directional amplifier;

removing a second coaxial cable from said cable organizer;

connecting one end of said second coaxial cable to an indoor antenna connector of said bi-directional amplifier and connecting the other end of said second coaxial cable to an omni directional indoor antenna;

activating a power switch which actuates delay circuitry for powering said portable bi-directional amplifier to ensure adequate isolation between said omni-directional indoor antenna and said directional outdoor antenna eliminating the opportunity for oscillation;

routing said second coaxial cable and said omni directional antenna into said radio communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication; and

,

positioning said omni directional indoor antenna in said radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication.

2. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

indicating the power status of said bi-directional amplifier by transmitting a specific signal pattern on a display unit on the outside of said bi-directional amplifier.

A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 1 wherein said delay circuitry delays powering of said bi-directional amplifier according to a programmed amount of time.

4. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 1,

wherein said step of determining the location of said particular donor repeater site is determined from said regional grid map includes using said regional grid map to identify several alternate donor repeater site locations in proximity to said location of said particular donor repeater site having said radio communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, said regional grid map has a North direction indicator, longitudinal indications, latitudinal indications,

and using said regional grid map to determine which donor repeater site to communicate with and directing said directional outdoor antenna in a correct azimuthal direction and elevating said directional outdoor antenna as required.

A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the step of selecting a useable location outdoors for an outdoor maximum gain directional Yagi antenna with respect to a desired donor antenna tower;

includes the steps of;

establishing the latitude and longitude of said tripod location;

indicating the location of the tripod on said regional grid map;

determining North direction;

determining the preferred donor repeater site from said regional grid map;

placing said regional grid map in alignment with North direction;

aiming said directional outdoor antenna at said preferred donor repeater site;

performing a radio check to determine satisfactory coverage; and

,

selecting an alternate donor repeater site if said radio check does not determine satisfactory coverage.

A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 1, wherein the step of activating a power switch which actuates delay circuitry for powering said portable bi-directional amplifier which ensures isolation between said omni directional indoor antenna and said directional outdoor antenna includes pressing a power button:

for less than 2 seconds, for 2 seconds but less than 5 seconds, or for 5 seconds or more.

7. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the step of:

powering said bi-directional amplifier with light-weight batteries.

8. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the step of:

powering said bi-directional amplifier with external AC line power, vehicle, or solar panel input from outside said bi-directional amplifier or from battery modules located inside said bi-directional amplifier.

9. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the step of:

placing a plurality of said omni directional antennas within said building where desired;

attaching one end of a flexible, low-loss, coaxial cable to each of said omni directional indoor antennas and attaching the end of said flexible, low-loss cables to said bi-directional amplifier.

10. A method for deploying a portable communication radio coverage enhancement device, comprising the steps:

selecting a tentative location for an outdoor antenna;

laying a portable antenna kit with orientation toward a structure entry;

extending tripod legs;

standing said tripod upright with a cable organizer aimed at said structure entry;

orienting a grid map at said tripod base;

removing top and bottom cable retention straps of said cable organizer;

aiming said outdoor antenna at a selected donor repeater site based upon said grid map at tripod base;

placing a portable amplifier near said tripod base;

connecting an outdoor antenna cable to an amplifier outdoor antenna port;

connecting an indoor antenna cable to an amplifier indoor antenna port;

powering said amplifier with delayed startup of said amplifier;

pulling said indoor antenna connected to said indoor antenna cable from clips of said cable organizer;

transporting said indoor antenna into said structure; and

,

positioning said indoor antenna near a center of work area inside said structure.

11. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, comprising the steps of:

transporting an indoor kit and an outdoor kit to a building or other structure where In-Building Communication enhancement may be needed;

selecting a useable location outdoors for an outdoor maximum gain directional Yagi antenna with respect to a desired donor antenna tower;

performing a check using a portable radio to establish communication with desired donor antenna tower;

selecting another useable location outdoors for said outdoor maximum gain directional Yagi antenna if said check is unsatisfactory and repeating said check using a portable radio;

removing a heavy-duty tripod stand from said outdoor kit, said tripod stand includes base legs and extending said base legs;

setting said tripod stand upon said selected useable location;

placing said indoor kit on the ground near said tripod;

removing said maximum-gain directional Yagi antenna from said outdoor kit;

attaching a socket connector of said maximum-gain directional Yagi antenna to a ball mount of said tripod stand;

removing a first flexible, low-loss, coaxial cable from said outdoor kit;

attaching one end of said first flexible, low-loss, coaxial cable to said maximum gain directional Yagi antenna;

attaching the other end of said first flexible, low-loss, coaxial cable to a portable bi-directional amplifier of said indoor kit;

orienting a grid map on the ground at said base legs of said tripod stand;

aiming said maximum gain directional Yagi antenna at said donor radio tower along the desired azimuth angle and adjusting for the desired elevation angle;

raising a stand mast of said tripod to a desired height;

placing said indoor kit in a selected location within said building or other structure;

opening a lid of said indoor kit;

removing an omni directional indoor antenna from said snap mounts within said indoor kit;

closing said lid of said indoor kit;

placing said omni directional antenna within said building where desired;

attaching one end of a second flexible, low-loss, coaxial cable to said omni directional indoor antenna;

placing said omni directional antenna in the desired coverage area;

pulling said second flexible, low-loss, coaxial cable to said portable bi-directional amplifier of said indoor kit;

attaching the other end of said second flexible, low-loss, coaxial cable to said portable bi-directional amplifier; and

,

activating a power switch which actuates delay circuitry for powering said portable bi-directional amplifier to ensure adequate isolation between said omni-directional indoor antenna and said directional outdoor antenna eliminating the opportunity for oscillation.

12. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 11, wherein the step of selecting a useable location outdoors for an outdoor maximum gain directional Yagi antenna with respect to a desired donor antenna tower includes the steps of:

establishing the latitude and longitude of said tripod location;

indicating the location of the tripod on said regional grid map;

determining North direction;

determining the preferred donor antenna tower from said regional grid map;

placing said regional grid map in alignment with North direction;

aiming said directional outdoor antenna at said preferred donor tower;

performing radio check to determine satisfactory coverage; and

,

selecting an alternate donor tower if said radio check does not determine satisfactory coverage.

13. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 11, wherein the step of activating a power switch which actuates delay circuitry for powering said portable bi-directional amplifier which ensures isolation between said omni directional indoor antenna and said directional outdoor antenna includes pressing a power button:

for less than 2 seconds, for 2 seconds but less than 5 seconds, or for 5 seconds or more.

14. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 11, further comprising the step of:

powering said bi-directional amplifier with light-weight batteries.

15. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 11, further comprising the step of:

powering said bi-directional amplifier with external AC line power, vehicle, or solar panel input from outside said bi-directional amplifier or from battery modules located inside said bi-directional amplifier.

16. A method for using a public safety radio on a regional radio system having one or more repeater donor sites and in a radio-communication dead zone or other area having poor radio communication, as claimed in claim 11, further comprising the step of:

placing a plurality of said omni directional antennas within said building where desired;

attaching one end of a flexible, low-loss, coaxial cable to each of said omni directional indoor antennas and attaching the end of said flexible, low-loss cables to said bi-directional amplifier.

17. A method for deploying a portable communication radio coverage enhancement device, comprising the steps:

selecting a tentative location for an outdoor antenna;

selecting a location for an indoor antenna;

establishing the latitude and longitude of said outdoor antenna at said selected location;

indicating the location of said outdoor antenna on said regional grid map;

determining North direction;

placing said regional grid map in alignment with said North direction;

determining the preferred donor repeater site from said regional grid map;

aiming said directional outdoor antenna at said preferred donor repeater site;

placing a portable amplifier near said outdoor antenna;

connecting a first antenna cable to said portable amplifier and said outdoor antenna;

connecting a second antenna cable to said portable amplifier and said indoor antenna; and

,

powering said amplifier with delayed startup of said amplifier.

18. A method for deploying a portable communication radio coverage enhancement device as claimed in claim 17, further comprising the steps:

performing a radio check to determine satisfactory coverage; and

,

selecting an alternate donor repeater site using said regional grid map if said radio check does not determine satisfactory coverage.

19. A method for deploying a portable communication radio coverage enhancement device, comprising the steps:

selecting a tentative location for an outdoor antenna;

selecting a location for an indoor antenna;

establishing the latitude and longitude of said outdoor antenna at said selected location;

indicating the location of said outdoor antenna on said regional grid map;

determining North direction;

placing said regional grid map in alignment with said North direction;

determining the preferred donor repeater site from said regional grid map;

aiming said directional outdoor antenna at said preferred donor repeater site;

placing a portable amplifier near said outdoor antenna;

connecting a first antenna cable to said portable amplifier and said outdoor antenna;

connecting a second antenna cable to said portable amplifier and said indoor antenna; and

,

powering said amplifier with delayed startup of said amplifier;

transmitting a radio signal at a first frequency to said selected donor repeater site; and

,

receiving a radio signal at a second frequency from said selected donor repeater site.

20. A method for deploying a portable communication radio coverage enhancement device as claimed in claim 19, further comprising the steps:

performing a radio check to determine satisfactory coverage; and

,

selecting an alternate donor repeater site using said regional grid map if said radio check does not determine satisfactory coverage.
