1. A communication device comprising:

  • a transmitter configured to generate transpositional modulation (TM) signals that convey information on carrier signals without directly altering an amplitude, a phase, or a frequency of the carrier signals;

    a receiver;

    one or more processors; and

    a data store coupled to the one or more processors having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform operations comprising;

    controlling the transmitter to transmit a transmission signal that includes a carrier signal modulated with a TM signal;

    receiving, from the receiver, a response signal from a second device in response to the transmission signal; and

    identifying the second device as a TM capable device based on determining whether the response signal includes transpositional modulation.
